In my first legislative session, I was proud to work alongside Senator Kleinpeter to advance public safety with several bills aimed at curbing police chases that are all too often fatal. I was on hand for the signing of my bill, now Act 175, that creates new "specialty black" license plates, which will fund training for high-speed pursuits. This and other bills honor Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, tragic victims during a police chase in Brusly in 2022. I will always stand up for the safety of our community.

This is for you, Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill!

Four years ago, I established the Task Force on Safety for Law Enforcement Officers Involved in High-Speed Vehicle Pursuits to investigate and evaluate police officer training and protocols that would enhance the safety of law enforcement officers and innocent bystanders.
Our findings revealed the necessity for more stringent penalties and increased funding for high-speed pursuit training and technology.
In collaboration with Representative Martinez, HB 801 was introduced, which establishes Special License Plate Classic Black We Will Never Forget Caroline and Maggie plates. The revenue generated from these plates will be allocated towards high-speed pursuit training at the State Police training facility for Sheriff deputies and local police officers.
Additionally, we enacted SB 58, which stipulates that individuals who commit the crime of aggravated flight from an officer resulting in serious bodily injury shall be imprisoned at hard labor for a MINIMUM of two years.

Funds received by a parish law enforcement agency from fines imposed pursuant to this Section shall be deposited into an account designated by the agency and utilized to support either high-speed pursuit driver training or the acquisition of devices or technology designed to mitigate the public safety risks inherent to high-speed police pursuits. If you haven’t downloaded the app please download pursuit alert. If there is a high speed pursuit near you and that agency has the technology you will be alerted.

We will continue to look for better ways so that innocent lives won’t be lost

Digital Siren

Today, we unveiled new technology, Digital Siren, designed to notify motorists of active law enforcement pursuits, road hazards and closures, active shooter situations, and lost child alerts.

We are proud to be the first Sheriff’s Office in the state to have our units equipped with this innovative safety tool.

Our goal is to enhance your situational awareness. If you receive an alert:

Slow down
Stay alert

“There are no good pursuits, like there are no good wars, but they are bound to happen. We need to do everything we can to minimize the risks to our citizens.”— Sheriff Brett Stassi

We encourage everyone to download the Digital Siren app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Please share this information with family and friends.
