Today, September 1st, marks the beginning of National Literacy Month, a time to celebrate the power of reading, learning, and giving every child the opportunity to discover what’s possible through a book.

And what better way to kick off Literacy Month than by getting ready for Reading for a Bright Future!

Through Lit Academy, a program of Opportunity Uplifted, we’re bringing our community together for a morning dedicated to literacy and our young readers.

Literacy is more than learning how to read. It builds confidence, imagination, knowledge, and opportunity — and it starts with giving our children access to books and experiences that make them excited about reading.

Throughout September, we’ll be celebrating literacy, sharing resources, and continuing our mission to help build brighter futures — one reader at a time. 📚

📚✨ **AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL A. HARPER** ✨📚

We’re excited to welcome **Michael A. Harper** as one of our featured local authors for **Reading for a Bright Future!**

Michael is an **author, educator, veteran, and creator of *The Kornbread Kidz***. Through his work as a police officer serving in schools and his experiences as a veteran around the world, Michael has gained a unique perspective that he brings to his storytelling — teaching young readers about **resilience, creativity, confidence, and independent thinking**.

Inspired by his family, Michael creates stories that encourage children to **believe in themselves, follow their dreams, think for themselves, and have the courage to resist peer pressure**.

📖 During **Reading for a Bright Future**, Michael will share his book:

**✨ *Big Boot and the Dream* ✨**

Through *The Kornbread Kidz*, Michael uses relatable characters and meaningful adventures to entertain children while introducing important life lessons that can help them navigate the world around them.

We’re proud to give children in our community the opportunity to meet a local author, hear his story firsthand, and see that their own ideas and dreams can become something incredible, too.

📚 **Every child attending will receive a FREE book** and have the opportunity to experience stories designed to uplift, encourage, and inspire.

Opportunity Uplifted joined today’s Community Outreach event at Orange Square Park to distribute Storm Ready Seniors emergency preparedness kits and help adults 50+ take practical steps toward being safer and more prepared before severe weather.

A special thank you to Worth It Nation International Ministries for inviting us to be part of today’s event and creating space for us to connect directly with our community.

We’re also grateful to our Brunswick Home Depot for donating the buckets that help keep each preparedness kit organized, reusable, and weather-protected. That local support helped us make these kits even more useful for the neighbors receiving them today.

Thanks to AARP Livable Communities for the generous support that made this project possible. Storm Ready Seniors is supported through the 2026 AARP Community Challenge.

📚✨ **AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: ALBERT WHITNEY** ✨📚

We’re excited to introduce Albert Whitney one of our featured local authors for Reading for a Bright Future!

Albert is a storyteller, creator, and proud father of four — three spirited girls and one adventurous boy — who inspire every page he writes.

After a remarkable **28½-year career in local and federal law enforcement**, Albert turned his unique perspective, patience, and creativity toward storytelling. He has written three children’s books and published two:

📖 Pat and Kat: A Princess’ Day at Daddy’s
📖 Pat and Kat: What Pat Loves About Kat

Through his stories, Albert hopes to spark curiosity, courage, joy, and imagination while helping young readers see the world as a place filled with wonder, adventure, and possibility.

Albert is also the creative force behind P.A.T.S. Aerial Media, where he brings stories to life through professional drone photography, cinematic imagery, and bold imagination.

Whether he’s capturing breathtaking views from the sky, writing his next story, or reading aloud to a room full of eager young minds, Albert’s mission remains the same: to help others discover new ways of seeing their world.

We can’t wait for our young readers and families to meet Albert and experience his stories at Reading for a Bright Future!
