We had the best discovery presentations Thursday! Really timely topics.
Michelle Doherty of Mawita'nej Epijij, a gathering place for Wabanaki people, updated us on how MWGT’s grant was used. The group was able to purchase books, Michelle said, “that told more than just a story….they connect indigenous people to their heritage. Connect back to our Wabanaki roots.”
Michelle personally has reconnected with family members, is beginning to learn her native language, and has even made a skirt in Wabanaki tradition.
The Immigrant Advocacy Project gave a presentation straight from the daily headlines.
Marjorie Hankla explained the 3 core services the group provides.
The main focus is legal support during the 6-8 yr asylum process. They helped 6000 people last year!
The other services provided to new Mainers are outreach and education, and advocacy before policy makers.
MWGT thanks both organizations for providing us with an informative discussion.
