Liberty County's proposed wastewater facility still in hot water 💧 County leaders and residents clash on the best path forward, with questions on all sides about economic growth, land use and development, environmental protection, and impact on existing communities.

It's vital that residents have a say in the future of their county—and next week's Public Hearing is the perfect time to voice concerns and ask questions.

👥 Board of Commissioners Public Hearing
🗓️ Tuesday, June 9 @ 6 PM
📍 Liberty County Courthouse Annex (112 N Main St., Hinesville)

We're watching this issue closely, encouraging County leaders to provide additional data about the environmental impacts of wastewater discharge and to investigate alternative discharge sites. Stay tuned— and see y'all next Tuesday 🗣️

Nearly 1,000 members from Liberty and Bryan Counties have loudly opposed a proposed state-of-the-art water reclamation facility, which would discharge treated wastewater a few feet from the sandbar.

⚠️⚠️URGENT - TAKE ACTION TODAY! Tomorrow, June 2, is the deadline to submit comments on the administration's plan to "deregulate" the 2008 vessel speed rule that protects critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. It's essential that we speak out now—and it's quick and easy! You can submit your comments directly via https://www.regulations.gov/comm.../NOAA-NMFS-2026-0364-0001 ... or simply use our partner Defenders of Wildlife's link below.

Some facts:
🐋There are only about 380 North Atlantic right whales left on the planet, and only about 70 reproductive females. We CANNOT afford to weaken these proven protections now.

🐋Years of scientific evidence show that the 10-knot speed reduction has been highly effective at reducing vessel strike mortality for right whales.

🐋While we support research and investment into emerging technologies, NO existing technologies are currently capable of serving as a standalone solution for reducing lethal vessel strike risk.

Tell the Trump administration not to weaken much-needed protections for North Atlantic right whales!

“It’s a good first step but there’s quite a bit more to do.”

Pooler city leaders recently approved the purchase of 28 acres of undeveloped adjacent to Tom Triplett Park. While leaders cite conservation and preservation, a three-year timer on the land's "public" status has residents keeping their guard up.

“Local organizations are indispensable to environmental health work,” says Noah Scovronick, PhD, associate professor of environmental health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. “Social and economic history is deeply connected to present day environmental challenges, and researchers cannot understand that context without local partnerships. That context should guide both scientific assessment and the solutions designed to protect community health.”

“As stated in the petition, every study the [Jekyll Island Authority] has commissioned, every formal plan it has approved, in the past decade, backs the simple premise that the JIA should be moderating, not accommodating, these kind of development pressures," said Ben Carswell, president of Coastal Georgia Audubon Group in his comments to the JIA. "The Authority’s mission explicitly charges you with finding balance.”

⚠️ Richmond Hill: The nickel refinery is STILL on the table!

WHY?

👍 In February, Richmond Hill city staff determined that the Belfast Commerce Centre’s PUD doesn’t allow a nickel refinery “by-right”—meaning Westwin would need special permission from the city to build its proposed refinery.

👎 Unfortunately, Caesarstone is NOT taking “no” for an answer and is appealing the staff’s interpretation.

👉 The Board of Zoning Appeals meeting is NEXT week: Tuesday, June 2 @ 6 PM (40 Richard R. Davis Drive, Richmond Hill)

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

👥 Come to the meeting! There will not be time for the public to comment, but your presence shows your city council that this issue matters and they should uphold their own staff’s interpretation of the law.

✍️ Add your name to this petition organized by fellow residents (and already bearing over 4,500 signatures!), saying a nickel refinery doesn’t belong in Richmond Hill: https://www.change.org/p/reject-the-proposed-nickel-refinery-in-bryan-county

Keep nickel refining out of Richmond Hill: see you Tuesday!

❗TAKE ACTION TODAY TO SAVE RIGHT WHALES: Reducing vessel speeds is proven to reduce the risk of mortality by vessel strikes for critically-endangered North Atlantic right whales. There are NO proven technological solutions available—yet the administration has announced plans to roll back the vessel speed rule and rely on untested and ineffective technology instead.

It's critical that we make our voices heard 📣 SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS BEFORE NEXT TUES, JUNE 2 asking the administration to KEEP the vessel speed rule in place. It's quick and easy using the following link: https://www.regulations.gov/commenton/NOAA-NMFS-2026-0364-0001

This vessel speed rule applies to large ships 65 feet and above—NOT the vast majority of personal boats or even large yachts—and already includes exemptions for human safety. Along with entanglements from commercial fishing gear, vessel strikes are a leading cause of mortality for a species with fewer than 380 individuals (and only 70 reproductively active females) remaining.

The Trump administration is proposing to weaken regulations meant to protect the North Atlantic right whale and instead rely more heavily on technology to reduce vessel strikes, a leading cause of death and injury for the species, despite conservation organizations arguing that these fixes are not y...
