Betrayal vs. Benevolence. Compassion vs. Competition. Reasonably Timed fun vs. Several Hour epic. In short, a grudge match for the ages: vs . The first of its kind discovered by Board Game Club many moons ago, Shadows introduced our innocent club to treachery and deceit with its traitor mechanic. Further, the ticking clock of the siege engine inspires dread in some even to this day. Hoping to eliminate Shadows with light, Hanabi is a short, cooperative card game inspired by Japanese fireworks shows. Like matter and antimatter, Hanabi faces down Shadow’s focus on deceit by revealing your hand to everyone but you. Do not mistake the game’s colorful exterior for ease, however--one wrong move and Hanabi will explode, leaving all your work in ruins. Both games have just claim to a spot in the next round-—but only one will survive.

vs , a duel between two titans of medieval politics simulations. El Grande existed only in BGC legends until its recent reappearance in print, but has quickly become a fan favorite among caballeros y caballeras. Players vie for majority rule in the provinces of 16th century Spain, but don’t be so certain your victory is sealed until the troops storm from el castillo! Not dissimilarly, Dominion, set in slightly earlier times and slightly unclearer location, tells the tale of medieval ruler with greater ambition than his parents, trying to seize the most land and build his kingdom. The gold standard for deck building games, Dominion is exactly as much fun as you have villages in your hand.

vs . Lightning fast play-time. Unreachable player caps. Information. Investigation. Cooperation. Shenanigans. Buffoonery. All these and more thrust One Night Ultimate Werewolf into the spotlight when it was, for weeks, the first game of the day played at the BGC. Between One Night’s inventive take on the classic game of Mafia, its slick app interface, and the vast host of memes that have been borne from its gameplay, it’s no wonder that the game reigns as the sovereign of the social induction genre. Sitting opposite, a titan from the cooperative games sphere in its own right, Sentinels of the Multiverse is the lovechild of the deck and action machine mechanics of Dominion and your elementary school comic book fantasies. Both of these games are crowd favorites, but it remains to be seen which really commands the club’s loyalty. Cast your vote by commenting with the hashtag of your chosen game!

vs . The shadow of Cosmic Encounter looms large over the whole history of the BGC. Many are members of our club who cut their gaming teeth playing and teaching Cosmic. For these constituents, Cosmic Encounter is not just a game, but a symbol—a glorious ideal of what gaming can be, the inspiration for their love of our shared hobby. Nonetheless, Cosmic faces an opponent in Fiasco that it cannot hope to defeat easily. Fiasco takes the traditional board game formula—have fun by playing to win—and inverts it: win by playing to have fun. It’s this aspect of Fiasco’s design that makes one wonder if Cosmic Encounter merely scratches the surface of gaming’s potential. Who will triumph in this epic encounter? The storied hero with one battle left to fight, or the cunning challenger who’s not quite like anything else? Cast your vote by commenting with the hashtag of your chosen game!

vs . If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Puerto Rico ought to be feeling pretty good about itself right now. Puerto Rico is a game so solid, dynamic, and elegantly designed, that its gameplay has become the model for a score of imitators, but none yet have come close to the original's awesome quality. On the other hand, limping into the Final Fourteen bracket in a wild card slot, Castle Risk is a game rarely spoken of, a game with nothing to lose and everything to prove. While the game is often referred to in jest, one can't help but notice that only fond memories seem to be attached to it. Will that be enough to triumph over one of the all-time greats of gaming? The first round of the BGC “Final Fourteen” Fantasy Board Game Bracket begins! vs . A monolithic figure in board games with a vast international fanbase and a storied career spanning over two decades, versus a game so young it can figuratively be said to have been raised by the competition. The rookie, Dead of Winter, sports a flashy zombie setting and an innovative take on co-op/traitor mechanics, but will that be enough to unseat Settlers of Catan's raw staying power? Cast your vote by commenting with the hashtag of your chosen game!
