It's a holiday weekend and we hope that you'll be stopping by the Farmers Market on Saturday! It's the height of the growing season with tons of colorful vegetables available and we have featured artist Lucy Spieler joining us again this weekend with prints, cards, and t-shirts. You can pick up a copy of the poster she designed for the Market at the BTLT booth.

Have you tried the smoothies from Pumpkin Vine Family Farm? A new vendor at our Market this season, Anil and his family bring a variety of products from their goats: milk, yogurt, and cheeses. Their specialty is a berry smoothie and a mango lassi! Unique and refreshing - we highly recommend giving them a try.

For some shoppers at the Market, planning for Saturday night's dinner is as easy as stopping by the Niyat Catering booth and picking up stewed lentils, vegetables, or chicken. Aklilu brings his delicious Ethiopian dishes each week, meant to be enjoyed with injera, a thin type of fermented bread with a spongey texture. If you haven't tried Aklilu's cooking, you still have plenty of Saturdays to pick something up.

Bring a friend, bring your bags, and don’t forget your shopping list! With the holiday weekend we expect it to be busy - we encourage carpooling and please be patient when looking for parking. Expanded archery season starts September 12! Learn more at btlt.org/hunting_2026/

As you head out on BTLT trails this fall, remember that some of our preserves are open to bowhunting by permission. Hunting is an important cultural tradition, provides food, connects people with nature, and can help farmers manage deer that can cause significant crop damage.

Bowhunting only by permission is currently allowed at Crystal Spring Farm, Tarbox Preserve, Woodward Cove, and Woodward Point.

A few reminders when hiking:
🔸Wear blaze orange (vests are available to borrow at parking-area kiosks).
🔸Stay on marked trails.
🔸Keep your dog leashed.
🔸There is no hunting on Sundays in Maine.
🔸Hunters may not discharge an arrow within 75 feet of a trail.

Every season, BTLT interns are offered a plot in the Tom Settlemire Community Garden to collectively try their hand at gardening. For some, this is their first experience getting their hands in the soil, for others, it is a fun opportunity to try growing something new. Each season it is so fun to watch this intern tended plot transform from soil into a vibrant colorful garden!

This year’s interns grew zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, and lots (and lots!) of lettuce and enjoyed plenty of fresh harvests along the way. 🥒🍅🌱🥬

From rescuing leftover seedlings to harvesting radishes and turning homegrown veggies into zucchini bread, salads, wraps, and sandwiches, each intern found something to love about growing their own food.

Corn season is upon us and you can find some of the best corn in Maine at the BTLT Farmers Market at Crystal Spring Farm this Saturday!

Applewald Farm is just one of our vendors offering their fresh picked corn. Fresh, crisp, the staple of a summer meal - we can't imagine a more beautiful thing. Corn isn't the only thing they offer at Applewald - you'll find plenty of other fresh veggies plus some incredible jams and jellies.

Featured Allison McKeen will be back at the Market this weekend with unique and quirky prints, cards, tea towels and more. Plus you can pick up the tote bag she designed for the Market at the BTLT info booth.

Have you seen the dirt piles? 🚧

The BTLT Farmers Market sees hundreds of visitors every Saturday from May-October, bringing in not only $1.7M to our local food economy annually, but also LOTS of cars to busy Pleasant Hill Road!

In response to community concerns the last few years around safety and parking, an increase in vendor interest from local farms and food businesses, and a need for increased accessibility, we are excited to be creating a safer, larger, more sustainable, and weather-resilient home for the Farmers Market for generations to come.

With a larger green, we'll be able to add an additional 10 vendor booths, while also leaving room for even more should we need to expand further. The green will also be increasing in size to allow more space for long lines and flow and better accommodate accessibility and mobility for shoppers. Two-thirds of the new parking area will remain unpaved and will be used seasonally for Market days, helping keep cars off Pleasant Hill Road. The one-third that will be paved will be used year-round, as part of the larger vision for this property as home for community, conservation, education, and connection.

The project also includes an intentional underground stormwater runoff management system with native plantings suited to the property’s woodland, wetland, and meadow habitats! Once construction is complete, we expect the view from Pleasant Hill Road to look very similar to as it did pre-construction. We’re excited to see this first phase take shape and anticipate completing construction before winter.

Please join us at BTLT’s Tom Settlemire Community Garden on Thursday, Sept 17th, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm for an immersive class on making vermouth! 🌿🍸

You will learn about the history and technique of vermouth making, while sipping on vermouths and snacking on tasty Vessel & Vine goodies. We will walk the native plants and herb gardens together, and identify and pick plants for your very own vermouth blend. You will leave with the start of your own custom vermouth and instructions on how to finish it at home.

$65/per person ($30 of which goes to BTLT’s mission!)

August is National Water Quality Month and an opportunity to highlight the role that conservation plays in safeguarding water quality at both the local level and beyond! We all depend on access to clean drinking water.

Water quality impacts every facet of life, providing the basis for a healthy ecosystem that supports diversity of plants and wildlife and the essential ingredient in the success of working farms and fisheries that we depend on for food, recreation, and so much more.

Recognizing that water touches all aspects of our lives, it is central in the Land Trust’s mission and our work to protect and maintain water quality by buffering rivers and bays from runoff and pollution, as well as conserving critical habitat and protecting water access. To date, the Land Trust has protected over 158,000 feet of shoreline along the rivers and bays of Brunswick, Topsham, and Bowdoin – that’s over 30 miles! These protected waterways are woven into our lives and livelihoods as part of the landscape, economy, and ways that we interact with our environment through outdoor recreation opportunities such as boating, fishing, and waterfowl hunting.

Interested in learning more about local efforts underway to protect water quality, wildlife, and more?

Learn about Free the Andro, a local nonprofit working to restore abundant and sustainable migratory fish passage at the Brunswick Dam to connect communities, revive fish populations, and broaden economic opportunities in the Androscoggin River watershed. Formed in response to the dam’s federal license renewal process, Free the Andro has been providing opportunities for the public to get engaged and educated about the impacts of the dam on migratory fish passage and the dam’s licensing process, which is up for renewal in 2029.

A free public meeting will be held on September 15, 2026 from 5 – 6:30 PM at Curtis Memorial Library featuring a panel discussion with representatives from the Maine Department of Marine resources, Brookfield Renewable Partners, and FB Environmental to explore possible designs to be considered to restore abundant and sustainable fish passage at the Brunswick Dam.

Last weekend the BTLT Farmers Market at Crystal Spring Farm was so bustling and joyful! We loved getting to see everyone and it's our favorite time of the season when corn, tomatoes, and melons can be found throughout the booths.

Know what else you can find this Saturday? Kimchi! Daeun from Kimchi Beyond Compare will be joining us with a variety of her kimchi from family recipes. You can pick up a jar of traditional kimchi or try one of her unique varieties like blueberry.

And at the Market every week you can find the fun folks at GoGo Refill with all your household reusable needs, plus bags to use while shopping at the Market, and don't forget to bring your own jar to fill up on dish soap, laundry detergent, or household cleaner. Stop by their booth and don't be afraid to ask questions, they would love to tell you all about their products!
