Beautiful day on the river with the AP Environmental Science crew from West Albany HS — and history was made.

Within seconds of stepping in, our very first student spotted an adult Rainbow Trout. A first for our program, ever.

And here’s the cool part: this class has been with us since day one. Same program, same river, same school — from the very first snorkel to now.

Here’s to the students who keep showing up, and the river that keeps surprising us. 💙

What a great Saturday!

With the help of Albany Adopt A Park, Albany Parks & Recreation, Albany Public Works (Special shoutout to Natural Treatment Systems and their ShrubHub Nursery who provided many of the plants), Hope Church Albany, and all of our volunteers we were able to plant over 350 plants including 120+ oak trees, 150 shrubs and 100 camas bulbs at East Thornton Lake Natural Area in North Albany.

This is a huge step in the right direction for our goal of restoring native plant communities to the site while maintaining agricultural heritage and recreation opportunities.

Wanted to help plant but couldn't make it? We'll be doing another volunteer planting day on November 7th along Periwinkle Creek. More details to come!

We're partnering with Adopt-a-Park for a volunteer planting tomorrow, Saturday Sep 26th 9am-12pm at East Thornton Lake Natural Area - off North Albany Road, Albany, OR. Check out more details on the City of Albany's website.
Here's Alex today with a preview of the restoration site freshly staged for planting! 🌱

Education & Outreach Program Manager, Kristen Daly, & our Seasonal Educators had a blast leading outdoor school activities with the bright young minds at Central Linn Elementary School! 🎒🌲

These student scientists got up close and personal with the South Santiam river, checking out water quality, learning about habitat impacts & solutions, and discovering the amazing creatures that call our local streams home. From analyzing soil quality to understanding how a healthy riparian forest acts as a solar shield to regulate stream temperature, and get into the water to carefully collect macroinvertebrates—nature’s built-in indicators of long-term water quality.

And perhaps the best part? Snorkeling! 🥽

Immersive experiences like these change the way kids view the natural world, and we are honored to be a part of this program!

Back at Brush Creek 🌿The water is calm, the sky is clear, and the season of data collection has officially begun.

Since 2014, the Council has implemented riparian restorations along these banks, and seasonal monitoring is performed to gather the data showing how those years of restoration are translating into cooler, healthier water for the local ecosystem.

Thanks to Alex Rice for capturing this shot this week while out in the field deploying the temp loggers for the season!

This monitoring work is made possible through our partnership with the (ODA), whose funding supports our data collection efforts.
