Founding Texas Monthly editor William Broyles first saw the Rio Grande in 1962, and has since seen it at every season: flowing full of snowmelt in the spring, the cottonwoods just beginning to green, and the first rafts braving the high waters; clear and calm in the fall, the trees now golden-yellow, with fly fishermen casting into the quiet pools; and steel-gray and low in the winter, with the trees bare and skiers headed up the icy road. He fell in love with the river, with its smell and its vibrations and the cliffs and rocks and the feeling of giving himself to it and letting its awe-inspiring landscape pass by.

“Reading Jack Herrera’s recent Texas Monthly cover story on the crisis at the Rio Grande made me wonder just how long it would be until my memories of the river would be all I had,” Broyles writes. “They’re good ones, though.”
