Pretty Old Places is in Brownsville spotlighting this historic beauty on West Main in the College Hill Historic District.

The Bond House, also known as Whitehall, was built in 1868. This was a wedding gift to Kathryn Bond from her father. The Bond family lived here for over 60 years.

The home has been a Bed and Breakfast and an antique store and is now a private residence once again.

Congratulations to Theodore Pennel as he was pinned Sunday as an Eagle Scout. His pledge is to live with honor, loyalty, be courageous, cheerful and extend service to others. His service has included uncovering approximately 130 burial stones plus 2 abandoned granite headstones along the hidden fencerow at the Haywood County Farm. The stones were carefully placed and represent those that were buried in unmarked graves. Thank you Theodore!!

Haywood Heritage was honored to attend a special ceremony on May 15 at the historic Clover Bottom Mansion in Nashville, where Ann and the late Pat Mann were recognized by the Tennessee Historical Commission for their extraordinary contributions to historic preservation in Brownsville and Haywood County.

Ann Mann, along with the Manns’ son David representing the late
Mr. Mann, accepted the prestigious Certificate of Merit Award during the ceremony held at the Commission offices. The award was presented by Commission Chair Sam Elliott along with Board Member Laura Todd.

Pat and Ann Mann have long been valued supporters and advocates for preservation efforts throughout our community, and this recognition is richly deserved.

Sharing this from Architectural Hub—know your architecture! Do you recognize any of these styles right here in Brownsville–Haywood County? Take a look around our streets and historic districts…you might be surprised what you find.

American house styles are easier to read when you know what to look for.

From the compact Cape Cod and symmetrical Colonial to the mansard roof of Second Empire, the half-timbering of Tudor Revival, and the low horizontal lines of Prairie and Ranch homes — each style has a visual language of its own.

Roof shape, windows, entryways, porches, and ornament often reveal the period and influence behind a house long before you know its history.

A snippet of history from 2023: In partnership with Haywood Heritage, the Haywood County Highway Department did some truly heavy lifting—carefully placing this beautiful granite obelisk as a memorial to those laid to rest in unmarked graves at the Haywood County Farm. This tribute ensures their lives are remembered and honored, adding another meaningful chapter to the story of our community.

Progress on Heritage Hall!
We’re pleased to share this recent update from the Brownsville States-Graphic highlighting continued momentum on the Heritage Hall project in downtown Brownsville. This effort represents an important step toward creating a meaningful community gathering space while preserving one of our city’s historic treasures.
As we move forward, we do so with both gratitude and a sense of loss. This milestone is especially bittersweet following the passing of our beloved benefactor, Pat Mann, whose generosity and vision helped make this project possible. His legacy will live on through Heritage Hall and the many lives it will touch.
We remain deeply committed to seeing this project through as a lasting gift to our community.
