Before 9/25 (“Nine to Five”) is done, we’d like to dedicate today’s gifting of “A250” Chautauqua Children’s Libraries to 25 local schoolteachers to the late Dolly Parton.

Among her many feats & achievements, the one that we especially admire as an independent bookstore is the fact that Dolly was one of the great modern champions of literacy; a fair number of the children’s books donated to us have her “Imagination Library” insignia on them. On this 250th anniversary of the United States, The BUHO Foundation celebrates the spirit of such a talented & philanthropic American icon by continuing her spirit of gifting curiosity, community, and creativity in the form of these children’s books. These books resonate with the themes of our Chautauqua-on-the-Rio summer lecture series encouraging our children to be thoughtful learners & contributors to their classroom, family, & community.

Early literacy is key to curiosity, and a curious and welcoming mind is key to effective citizenship. Happy Dolly Parton Day! 😊 🦉 📚

CALLING ALL SCHOOLTEACHERS!! To celebrate a successful end to the America250 edition of Chautauqua-on-the-Rio, The BÚHO Foundation will be gifting twenty-five 13-book classroom libraries to local teachers!

Each of these books are related to the themes of each evening of our lecture series alongside 3 classic works of fiction. They all incorporate our store & nonprofit’s core values of curiosity, creativity, and community. These are the traits that we believe are embodied by great Americans from all walks of life, and can be cultivated in students of all ages. We hope these books may lead to our local kids asking questions, think out of the box, and to contribute to their classrooms, families, and our community.

Only 25 Chautauqua Libraries are available!

If you are a teacher, you are invited to reserve a 13-book Chautauqua Library for your classroom through the link below. These libraries are provided free of charge through The BUHO Foundation to support educators and classroom learning.

Pickup Information:

- 6:00 PM–10:00 PM

Additionally, thank you to all who attended our Phase 4 announcement during our cafe’s Grand Opening with the presentation “1,638 Days Later”. It started in the spirit of Independence Day by recognizing our 1st Amendment and three “Búho-ish” Americans (Franklin, Douglass, and Huerta) who embody our store’s values of Creativity, Curiosity, and Community. Then, we went through a history of the bookstore from pop-up shop to storefront to cafe, to the big reveal of Phase 4 being a hybrid nonprofit model. Finally, we did a ribbon cutting and had the attendees sign the original table from our pop-up days.

The future of Brownsville looks bright, and we wholeheartedly thank you, the Brownsville Readers, for helping us move through all 4 phases. We can’t wait to get started 😁 🦉 📚

Phase 4 is a nonprofit arm! In fact, we’ve been quietly doing it for the past 2 years. We would like to formally introduce you to “The BUHO Foundation” (Brownsville United through Humanities & Outreach: B.U.H.O.) A portion of every book, every coffee, and every gift that you purchase here at Búho will help continue to fund the philanthropy work that we’ve been doing for Brownsville!

This chapter of the Búho story is made possible through a partnership with the Mitte Cultural District to promote literacy in Brownsville alongside our bookstore’s values of community, curiosity, and creativity. Through the BUHO Foundation thus far, we’ve been able to gift 1,220 books to our community and host 168 community events in our space for everyone to enjoy free-of-charge.

From book giveaways, to Little Free Library restocks, to craft nights, and more - the BUHO Foundation is only getting started! Thank you all for your incredible support since we started as a little pop-up shop in 2022. We’re here at Phase 4 because you believed in Búho, and now we’re giving back because Búho believes in Brownsville. We appreciate you all for being a part of the Búho story, and we thank you for investing in our community through Búho, your downtown independent bookstore. 😊 🦉 📚
