On May 26, NASA made a major announcement. The first three Moon Base missions have been confirmed, with launch targets starting as early as fall 2026.

Moon Base I will use Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 1 lander to deliver scientific payloads to the Shackleton Connecting Ridge at the lunar South Pole, an area being prepared for future Artemis astronaut landings.

Moon Base II will deliver more than 1,100 pounds of cargo on Astrobotic's Griffin lander, including Astrolab's FLIP rover to test mobility systems on the lunar surface.

Moon Base III will fly the first payload selected through NASA's Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon initiative, with participation from ESA and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

NASA also awarded contracts totaling over $400 million to Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to build the first lunar terrain vehicles, designed to carry astronauts and cargo across the Moon's surface by 2028.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman described the vision clearly: "The Moon Base will be America's and humanity's first outpost on another celestial world."

This is not a distant plan. It is happening now.

On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy stood before 35,000 people at Rice University Stadium in Houston, Texas and delivered one of the most memorable speeches in the history of human exploration.

"We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

The speech came 16 months after Kennedy had committed the nation to a Moon landing before Congress in May 1961. NASA had made rapid progress in those months. Kennedy toured space facilities across the country for two days before arriving at Rice, and came away confident enough to publicly recommit the nation to the goal.

The context mattered. One month earlier, the Soviet Union had launched two manned spacecraft into orbit simultaneously for the first time, the latest sign that the space race was far from over.

The goal he set in motion was achieved on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the Moon.

Rice University established the nation's first dedicated space science department in 1963, directly in response to that speech. Today, Johnson Space Center sits on land that Rice donated to NASA.

We are building a workshop series for this Fall designed to help entrepreneurs in South Texas better understand funding, connect with investors, and approach capital conversations with confidence.

Before we finalize the topics, we want to hear directly from you.

Capital readiness, knowing how to clearly communicate your business to the people who can fund it , is one of the most overlooked skills in entrepreneurship. This program is meant to help change that for founders in our region.

Scan the QR code in the flyer or use the link below to take a quick two-minute survey and share which topics would help your business most.

Your input will help shape what gets covered this Fall.

From the first launch on April 12, 1981 to the final landing on July 21, 2011, NASA's space shuttle fleet flew 135 missions, helped construct the International Space Station, and inspired generations.

Five orbiters made up the fleet: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.

NASA notes that the program carried people into orbit repeatedly, launched and repaired satellites, conducted cutting-edge research, and built the largest structure in space, the International Space Station.

The program also recorded historic firsts. According to NASA, STS-7 carried Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space. STS-8 carried Guion Bluford, the first African American to fly in space.

The final mission, STS-135, ended July 21, 2011 when Atlantis rolled to a stop at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The shuttle fleet flew 135 missions and carried 852 total fliers over 30 years of missions.

Any time an astronaut gets out of a space vehicle, it is called an extravehicular activity, or EVA. Spacewalking symbolizes the human element of exploration more than any other activity in space.

The first spacewalk was performed by Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on March 18, 1965. It lasted 10 minutes. The first American spacewalk was performed by Ed White during the Gemini 4 mission on June 3, 1965. His lasted 23 minutes.
Today, spacewalks outside the International Space Station usually last between five and eight hours, depending on the job.

For every one hour an astronaut will spend spacewalking, they must train for seven hours in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, a pool near Johnson Space Center in Houston that holds 6.2 million gallons of water.

The world record for the most spacewalks belongs to Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyev, who made 16 spacewalks for a total of more than 82 hours outside in space.

On this National Astronaut Day, Expanding Frontiers celebrates the men and women who dedicate years of their lives to one of the most demanding careers on Earth, and beyond it.

Astronauts are trained to travel and work in space, carrying out missions in science, spacecraft maintenance, and human exploration.

Becoming a NASA astronaut is one of the most competitive processes in the world. Candidates must meet rigorous requirements in education, experience, and physical fitness before they are even considered. Those selected spend two years in basic training before they are eligible for a mission assignment.
As the Artemis program builds toward a sustained human presence on the Moon, the astronaut corps is preparing for missions that will define the next era of human exploration.

To every astronaut who has ever suited up: this day is for you.

Happy National Astronaut Day from Expanding Frontiers in Brownsville, Texas.

The Space Settlement Design Tournament is coming back to South Texas.

SSDT is a four-day competition where high school student teams design and pitch real concepts for future space colonies to a panel of working space industry professionals.

It is the only sanctioned tournament of its kind in South Texas, and it is the closest thing to working in the space industry that a high school student can experience right now.

Interested in competing? Fill out the application form at expandingfrontiers.org/ssdt or scan the QR code, and we will keep you updated as details are confirmed.
