Operation: Not Forgotten

Operation: Not Forgotten Clark Thornbury's Eagle Scout Project Each Veteran who serves in the military has a unique experience and each experience tells a story.

It is important that these personal narratives/stories of our Veterans are collected and preserved for future generations so that they can learn from these Veterans through their own words. Clark's Eagle Project, dubbed "Operation Not Forgotten", will record no less than 5 interviews of Veterans from Indiana between Fall 2023 and Spring 2024. These interviews will be at least 30 minutes in length

and recorded so that they may be transferred to the Library of Congress and kept for future generations. This Eagle Project has been partnered with American Legion Post #331 in Brownsburg, Indiana (as the beneficiary) and will seek donations to fund this project. Any funds above and beyond the cost of the project will be donated back to American Legion Post #331 Brownsburg, Indiana to fund Veteran projects/programs.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We would like to announce Clark is now an Eagle Scout. This is the finale and product of twelve years of hard work, dedication, determination, frustration, some procrastination, growth, leadership, laughter, confidence building, and being NYLT’s best spokesperson. We are beyond proud of this young man and all his hard work. We love you tons! A heartfelt thank you to those have help mentored him and guided him along this journey. A hugs thank you to Eric Thomas and Natasha Bokish for being there tonight and mentoring him and helping him through this chapter of his life. Clark finished up the last interview for his Eagle project tonight. Clark interviewed Sergeant First Class (Retired) Melissa Bellanceau on Wednesday, January 31st, 2024 at The Elks Lodge in Rushville, IN.

Melissa served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1995 to 2007 with job specialties in communications and as a recruiter. She served stateside and in Japan.

After a short break in service, she joined the Army National Guard and served as an Active Guard Reserve (active duty, full time unit support) Soldier from 2007 to 2018. Her service included a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. She retired in 2018 as a Sergeant First Class/E7.

During her service, she completed her Bachelor’s degree and started her Master of Social Work (MSW). She completed her MSW after retirement from the military.

In addition, Melissa is an artist. She has published one book “The Book of Don’t Forgets” containing her artwork. Her oil painting “Tormented Annie” and her book won first place at the Indianapolis Veteran Affairs Veterans Creative Arts Show in 2022 that was held at Fort Benjamin Harrison. They then went on to be displayed at the National Competition in St. Louis Missouri at the Veteran Affairs National Creative Art Show. “Tormented Annie” also received an Honorable Mention at the Anderson Art Museum. Her artwork has also been on display at the Indianapolis Opera about Veterans journeys and she helped pilot the Indiana IUPUI program called CAV Creative Arts for Veterans. She gave us the approval to share her book, Tormented Annie, and this patriotic painting. Melissa loves to donate her artwork to local nonprofits to help raise money and give back to local communities and charities. She kindly gifted a signed copy of the book to Clark prior to the interview.

Melissa - thank you for doing this interview, telling your story and, especially, for your service to state and nation!
