Aikyam 2016- Denver for Chennai. Together as One. The goal of Aikyam is to hold a fundraiser and raise a target amount of $35,000 for two of AID India’s long term rehabilitation projects.

The December 2015 floods in Southern India were one of the worst natural disasters to strike Chennai and its surrounding areas. The floods had devastating effect on life and property. Hundreds of people lost their lives, and over 1.8 million people were displaced from their homes or rendered homeless. Children in rural areas lost access to education as school buildings were ravaged. While funds po

ured in to take care of the immediate relief needs, there is still a lot more work that needs to be accomplished.

“Aikyam - Denver for Chennai. Together as One,” was born out of a deep response to be able to give back to Chennai. Team Aikyam includes a highly driven and passionate group of volunteers and kindred souls who gravitated to the cause. The vision of this team is to organize a community fundraiser in association with AID (registered nonprofit in the U.S.) to give back to the poorest of the poor in the rural areas around Chennai who still need help months after the devastating floods. The goal of Aikyam is to raise a target amount of $35,000 for two of AID India’s long term rehabilitation projects:

• Reconstruction of four huts that were destroyed in the rains to turn them into permanent homes (each house costs $2,500)
• Construction of a community center that will serve as an after school educational resource center for over 50 children and pay the salaries of teachers for 2 years (cost – $25,000)

On Monday, May 1 Aikyam will feature a fundraiser event at the Broomfield auditorium. This will be a multicultural dance and music ensemble specially curated Sulakshana Jayaram, Bharatanatyam Artist and Founder, Shivoham School of Dance in Denver. The program will feature professional and highly trained artists from Colorado who will showcase the best of Carnatic and Hindustani music, Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Kathak dance performances; a delightful western classical harp recital as well as an Irish step dance performance.
