Interpretation of the recent events surrounding the It’s Not A Fire…Fire, No One Can Keep the Story Straight, Incident, that took place on Friday, January 14th.
Residents saw smoke. A video dashcam captured flames. Residents were told that despite what they saw, this was NOT A FIRE. Updates were posted by the City on the Oil and Gas Dashboard (nowhere else) about what happened on the site, including a timeline. Don’t worry, everything worked as expected. It’s all fine! Malfunction aside, no need to be concerned. North Metro Fire almost didn’t even respond to this “insignificant” event! This incident catches the attention of the news media and in a surprise twist, the spokesperson from Civitas offered a totally different story as to what happened during the incident at the site than what the City posted earlier. Equipment malfunction. Emergency shut in of all wells. Flash and smoke occurred when everything was being restarted? Wait, what just happened? City gets an apology the next day from Civitas, for the unclear communication surrounding these events.
Residents are watching this all unfold, as confused as ever and are wondering what comes next? Is this really an “apology-accepted-let’s-frack-on” kind of situation? Or will there be some sort of accountability? And who is going to explain the great mystery of the not a fire…fire? There was smoke. There were flames. How was this NOT A FIRE?
Are you concerned about any of the mixed messages or about the fire (not a fire?) at the site? Please share your thoughts with City Council.
For TONIGHT’S (1/25) Council meeting, the Mayor is allowing residents to speak on oil and gas issues during public comments at the beginning of the meeting (6pm) OR later during item 11c January Monthly Oil and Gas Update.
