In love with flying, Katherine Stinson made a career in aviation and became the 4th female pilot to receive a license in the United States in 1912.

In 1913, she opened a flying school with her mother and sister in San Antonio, Texas. She began teaching her brothers and other kids how to fly.

In 1915, Katherine became the first woman to perform the "loop the loop" and continued to out-stunt and out-fly men during her time. By 1917, she had a six-month tour in China and Japan, Also in that same year, she set the record for a 9-hour 10-minute nonstop flight from San Diego to San Francisco.

In 1918, she was appointed to become the first woman Air Mail pilot.

The Stinson sisters were denied by the US government to join the Air Service so Katherine made fundraising flights for the Red Cross and Liberty Loan bond drives. She then became a volunteer ambulance driver for the Red Cross in France.

WWII Veteran James McCubbin was ecstatic when he got a surprise he didn't expect.

Now at 101 years old, McCubbin still vividly remembers what it was like to be a pilot during World War II. He was a pilot for U.S. Air Force and flew several missions with a P-51 Mustang. Unfortunately, the plane got shot down in 1945.
Back in the present, Catie Mason of the Renaissance Marquise coordinated with Commemorative Air Force to land a restored P-51 Mustang in Rome, Italy where McCubbin is currently residing.

McCubbin climbed almost to the wing of the fighter plane and re-created a picture of him with his plane more than 70 years ago.

This was truly a touching moment and a way to relive the memories that served to honor, educate, and inspire.

When you were a child, have you ever dreamed of flying or doing what seemed impossible to others?

Working in the aviation industry is not as popular as it once was among the younger generations. Our dreams becoming a lawyer, nurse, doctor or engineer are now being mentioned with becoming a pilot especially for those with early exposure to the aviation industry.

For the aviation industry to continue to strive, we must continue to increase awareness and create interest in younger generations, creating programs that showcase the aviation industry in its entirety.

The Aviation Community Foundation and our like-minded partners fulfills our mission of providing early exposure to the younger generation and to have their interests pique in aviation as either a hobby or a career.

This mother-daughter duo is not only workmates, but they made history as the first mother-daughter to co-pilot a flight last September 2019.

Captain Suzy Garrett and Donna Garrett, along with the rest of their family, are commercial pilots. Captain Garrett has been flying with Skywest for more than 30 years already.

Looking back, Garrett said there weren't many women who were pilots, and to become one was to be in the military. She wasn't tall enough for the military yet she enrolled in aviation school, and worked as a flight instructor before becoming one of the first female pilots at SkyWest.

Donna Garrett, having been exposed to aviation, decided to also become a pilot. She saw her parents' passion and love for flying and also fell in love with it.
