Larimer County, we’re heartbroken to share information about a sudden and tragic loss within our agency.

On June 16, an LCSO Deputy, Sergeant, and Sergeant’s family member were vacationing together on a motorcycle trip. The men were traveling on a North Idaho scenic highway when a pickup truck attempted to pass another vehicle in a marked no-passing zone. The truck crossed the double yellow centerline and collided with the motorcycles, killing all three riders.

The truck driver was arrested and booked into the Idaho County Jail on three counts of vehicular manslaughter. Idaho State Police are investigating this crash.

Out of respect for their families’ strong desire for privacy, we aren’t identifying the deputies at this time.

There are no good words in a situation like this. Put simply, these were incredible people who dedicated their lives to making Larimer County better every single day. They trained hard, they served well, and they loved life. As we walk the long and winding path of grief alongside their families, our resolve is stronger than ever:

For them, we’ll bring light into dark places.
For them, we’ll stand for good and fight against evil.
For them, we’ll live each day with gratitude and carry their legacy forward.

Rest easy, brothers. We’ve got it from here. 💙

We’ve gotten several inquiries about how people can help the affected families who lost loved ones. The Colorado Fraternal Order of Police is our only official donor partner and has set up a link for those who wish to support. 100% of proceeds will go to these families: https://givebutter.com/colorado-fop-family-support-fund-lodge4

Be wary of scams - never click links from unknown sources, and do not provide financial information to anyone soliciting it. We will never call, text, or email to ask for donations for this or any other cause.

It’s !

Marine Corps Corporal Charles Joseph Berry, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a member of a machine-gun crew, serving with the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the seizure of Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, on 3 March 1945. Stationed in the front lines, Cpl. Berry manned his weapon with alert readiness as he maintained a constant vigil with other members of his guncrew during the hazardous night hours. When infiltrating Japanese soldiers launched a surprise attack shortly after midnight in an attempt to overrun his position, he engaged in a pitched hand-gr***de duel, returning the dangerous weapons with prompt and deadly accuracy until an enemy gr***de landed in the foxhole. Determined to save his comrades, he unhesitatingly chose to sacrifice himself and immediately dived on the deadly missile, absorbing the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his own body and protecting the others from serious injury. Stouthearted and indomitable, Cpl. Berry fearlessly yielded his own life that his fellow marines might carry on the relentless battle against a ruthless enemy, and his superb valor and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of certain death reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

VFW Strongly Opposes Cuts to Veteran Disability Benefits: Congress is considering the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, legislation that would fund new veterans' benefits by cutting disability ratings for tinnitus and sleep apnea, which by VA's own numbers would affect up to 1.5 million veterans and remove $57 billion from veterans' disability compensation over ten years. The VFW strongly opposes the bill as currently drafted. "Veterans' benefits are an earned obligation of the nation, a promise made through the military service contract, and should not be financed through offsets, fee increases or reductions that place additional burdens on veterans, military families and survivors," said VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore in her statement condemning the bill’s funding mechanism. "A grateful nation pays its debts to veterans; it does not send them the invoice." The VFW urges all advocates to contact their members of Congress and demand they Honor the Contract!
