Happy Mother’s Day! As I honor the memory and strength of my own single mother—and reflect on my journey as a mom—I’ve been thinking about the deeper origins of this day.
Mother’s Day didn’t begin as a commercial holiday, but as a powerful call for peace. In the aftermath of the Civil War, it emerged as a plea for mothers around the world to have a voice in confronting and preventing the violence that claimed the lives of their sons.
That legacy still echoes today. The wounds of the Civil War remain, as does the ongoing struggle between the lofty ideals of our democracy and the painful reality of exclusion, hate, and injustice—harms that ripple through our entire society.
No mother should have to lose a child for that gap to be seen, or for change to be sparked. No mother should have to beg for peace so that they can see their sons and daughters grow old.
My mother-in-law endured both of her sons serving in Iraq and Afghanistan within a 3 year time frame. Today, our family works on peacekeeping efforts to ensure our Afghan allies and Ukrainian refugees are not only welcomed to America, but experience the peace we have been known for. The very peace all mothers want for their families. We must strive for peace, for ALL mothers worldwide.
Let this Mother’s Day be more than a celebration—it can be a recommitment to cherishing life and honoring those who nurture it. May we build a world where compassion, humanity, and peace guide us forward, instead of violence and despair. Mothers are where we find peace, equity, and strength and we honor the moms who have sacrificed so much for the greater good.
💐Happy Mother’s Day💐
Sincerely,
