Dig In! Our summer STEAM camp was definitely a highlight of the summer! Students explored the fields of geology, archeology, paleontology, seismology, engineering and architecture through play, visits from scientists and experts in the field, and lots of hands-on problem solving and experiments.
THANK YOU to everyone who shared their expertise to make this camp such an amazing learning experience for the 42 students who attended!
* Katie from Colorado who led campers through hands-on activities exploring how the Ute Indians have used STEAM to survive and thrive in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. History Colorado also provided "Grandmother Trunks" filled with items for campers to examine as they learned how archeologists use artifacts to learn about people from the past.
* Mary Anne, a paleontologist from Dinosaur Ridge who led a fascinating question and answer session for the campers.
* Dayan, a mining engineer at Onyx and PhD student at Colorado School of Mines, taught campers about modern, sustainable mining practices.
* Representatives from the Women's Impact Network at Emerson visited to lead campers through an activity engineering livable structures that can withstand extreme weather.
* Kelsey, the mom of a Broomfield STEM camper, shared her experiences as an archeologist in Colorado, and researching shipwrecks as an underwater archeologists, as part of her presentation about all the different career paths archeologists can take.
*Sandy, a local high school science teacher, who led the campers through a hands-on activity about fossil fuels and how they're extracted.
Last but not least, an extra THANK YOU goes to for the Youth Opportunities Fund grant, and the City and County of Broomfield for the Arts, Culture and Sciences grant that made this camp possible. These grants helped remove financial barriers for 27 of our campers, making STEAM camp accessible for kids who otherwise wouldn't have been able to attend!
