On the holy feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the “birthday” of our Church by the living presence of the Holy Spirit.

On the day of Pentecost, the fearful disciples of Christ became the Holy Apostles of our Church. Confusion was transformed into clarity, and division into unity. The same Holy Spirit who descended upon them continues to dwell in us today from the day of our holy baptism, guiding, strengthening, and renewing our lives.

Holy Pentecost invites each of us to ask: Am I open to the power of the grace of the Holy Spirit? Do I allow Him to shape my words, my decisions, and my relationships?

Let us treat this holy feast as something alive and personal. The Holy Spirit is at work in the Holy Sacraments of our Church, in our homes, in our communities, and in our hearts. If we make space for Him, He will bring grace where there is weakness, peace where there is anxiety, courage where there is fear, and love where there is distance.

May this Pentecost be for all of us a moment of renewal, a quiet but heartfelt return to the presence of God, who never ceases to come to us. Let us seek the presence of the power and the energies of the Holy Spirit in prayer, in the Holy Sacraments, and in every act of love, forgiveness, and humility that we offer to one another.

With paternal love and prayers for all our members,
+ Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos

Let’s roll up our sleeves one more time!

On Wednesday, May 27th, we will have another opportunity to work with the good people of Sharing Excess and help our neighbors in need. If you’ve been thinking you’d like more hands-on involvement, here’s your chance!

Our job will be to clean and sort produce that has been donated for distribution to people who are experiencing food insecurity. Sharing Excess supplies food (that would otherwise be wasted) to many charities and shelters; this is their singular focus. Their mission statement is below.

If you are interested in volunteering, sign up using the attached Sign Up Genius. Read about the location, times, and recommendations on how to dress. We’ll need 10- 15 volunteers. Those of us who participated in January agreed that the experience was rewarding and kind of fun! (We also advise wearing warm gloves🙂)

Please contact me if you have questions. Thank you!

The Chester Charter Scholars Academy has been one of our dedicated Philoptochos philanthropies for many years. We have benefitted from watching the students improve their literacy and numeracy skills with our donations of books and math manipulatives.

Best of all is our opportunities to read with the students in the third grade twice each year. The staff divides the class of 55 into small groups of 7 to 9 children. Each Philoptochos sister has a copy of the book in advance to preview and is able to work on fluency, decoding skills and comprehension when reading with them. The students take turns reading aloud and love being read to as well.

After our session, we take a group photo and the students are presented with their new book to take home. Our most recent visit included the donation of a colorful bag filled with healthy snacks. The bags were filled by our Sunday School children who also wrote a note for each child that was included on their bag.

The children look forward to our visits and so do we. Not sure who has the greatest smiles, the students or our sisters.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society Chapter 1082 of St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall on May 7 welcomed hundreds of guests to its annual Bid ’n Buy, the chapter’s major fundraising event of the year. The community center was transformed with 1980s‑themed décor as attendees enjoyed a fun retro atmosphere, a delicious four‑course dinner, themed cocktails, fellowship, and the opportunity to bid on more than 300 prizes.

The event was powered by over 75 volunteers who handled everything from décor and prize preparation to the full meal served to the guests. Proceeds support the charitable outreach efforts of the Philoptochos, which provides assistance to individuals and families in need throughout the region and around the world.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Greek Independence Day Parade in Philadelphia on April 26th. Representing both our beloved homeland and our church community made the day especially meaningful. Marching together with our children, whose joy and enthusiasm brought smiles to all who lined the streets, was a beautiful reminder of the pride and traditions we continue to pass on to the next generation.
