I Think Horses Remember Something We Forgot

Sometimes I sit with the horses and have the strangest feeling.

Not that they're wiser than we are.

Not that they know secret things.

Just...

that they remember something we forgot.

They remember how to belong to a place.

How to greet the morning without rushing it.

How to stand in silence without feeling the need to fill it.

How to move only when movement is needed.

How to rest without guilt.

How to listen to the wind, the birds, and each other.

Watching them, I sometimes wonder...

when did humans decide we had to become separate from the world?

Separate from the trees.

Separate from the seasons.

Separate from the quiet.

The horses never made that decision.

They still live as though they are part of something larger than themselves.

Perhaps they are.

Or perhaps...

so are we.

We've just been distracted long enough to forget.

That's why I keep going back to the pasture.

Not because the horses have all the answers.

But because, every now and then...

they help me remember one.
