Your horses foundation starts HERE ๐ŸŽฏ
Hoof health and balance is IMPERATIVE to their overall health & success! Yet this is far too commonly overlooked, even by the most reputable trainers, farriers, and even vets! People want instant gratification for the perfect image and are willing to achieve this at great costs to their horse's well being and performance. Slap shoes on their feet and inject/ prescribe away for the quick fix, just cowboy up and knock some sense into them that'll teach 'em! Right? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”
ABSOLUTELY NOT. We know BETTER, it's time we are consistently CHOOSING BETTER, for them, for ourselves, for us all โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน๐Ÿ’ฏโœจ๏ธ
This is what sole mapping the natural barefoot hoof is supposed to look like. NO not perfect, there's no such thing. We don't carve away the essential structures that be to craft the perfect hoof. Rather, we allow the hoof to transform naturally through diligent balanced trimming techniques to restore healthy hoof circulation & function. ๐ŸŽฏ

Rethinking Lunging: A Tool for Balance, Not Just Energy

The act of lunging often gets bad press but I personally think it is a tool in the tool box that can be used to help the horse if performed in a way to help and not hinder.

๐Ÿ’ญWhat does โ€œlungeโ€ really mean?
The word comes from the French allonge โ€” โ€œto lengthen.โ€ Thatโ€™s the essence of lunging: giving the horse space to lengthen, balance, and explore posture.

๐Ÿ‘€Why I Lunge Horses
I often ask to see horses lunged during assessments. It reveals how they move in each direction, highlighting issues that arenโ€™t always obvious in a straight line.

โš–๏ธ Balance Before Impulsion
The biggest mistake I see is pushing horses forward too much. This drives them onto the forehand, bracing with their head and neck, and counter-bending to stay upright.
- Horses in this state wonโ€™t stretch โ€” they donโ€™t feel safe.
- Training aids often add to the brace rather than solve it.

By slowing the trot, the horse can find balance, feel secure, and begin to lengthen naturally. Only once balance is established should impulsion be introduced.

โญ• Circle Size Matters
Small circles make balance harder and increase uneven load through the musculoskeletal system.
- I often travel the arena alongside Elmo, mixing straight lines with gentle bends.
- Smaller circles are used briefly to encourage the inside hind to step under, then we return to larger circles to let that energy flow.

Constant small circles = higher risk of injury. Varying circle size = healthier, more engaged movement.

๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’จ Lunging Is Not Just โ€œBurning Energyโ€
Too often lunging is used to tire a horse out. But chasing them around only triggers cortisol and adrenaline, pushing them into flight mode.
- Flight mode = braced posture, misalignment, and higher injury risk.
- Adrenaline masks fatigue, making injury even more likely.

For lunging to build posture and stretch, the horse must first find calmness.

๐Ÿšถ Itโ€™s Okay to Walk
Lunging doesnโ€™t have to mean going fast. Horses should feel safe to walk, trot, and canter without fear. If your horse rushes as soon as you start, go back to basics โ€” show them lunging is about communication, not punishment.

๐ŸฉนConsider the Horse in Front of You
Every horse is different. Age, fitness level, past injuries, or current ailments all affect how they can move and balance.
- A young, fit horse may benefit from more variety and impulsion.
- An older horse or one recovering from injury may need slower work, larger circles, and more walking.
- Fitness and confidence should be built gradually, always respecting the horseโ€™s limits.

Lunging should never be a โ€œone size fits allโ€ exercise โ€” itโ€™s about meeting the horse where they are today.

โณ Less Is More
Another key factor is time. Lunging doesnโ€™t need to last long to be effective.
- Short, focused sessions help the horse stay mentally engaged and physically safe.
- Long, repetitive lunging can strain joints, increase fatigue, and undo the benefits of balance work.
- Think quality over quantity: 10 minutes of mindful lunging is often more valuable than 30 minutes of chasing.

โœจ Final Thought
Lunging, when done with balance, calmness, and variation, becomes a powerful tool for developing posture and connection. A horse in good form wants to explore good posture โ€” our job is to create the conditions for that.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How do you use lunging with your horses?

Tonightโ€™s post is about lunging, and more specifically, what Iโ€™m seeing people do with a lunge rope lately. This isnโ€™t a call out, itโ€™s an essential conversation. Especially for younger Pony Club members or young riders who are trying to learn and are being shown very mixed messages.

Lunging isnโ€™t about exhausting a pony, horse or donkey. Itโ€™s not about strapping things on to make their head look a certain way.
And itโ€™s definitely not about jumping for fun on a circle.

Lunging is controlled schooling from the ground.
The goal is balance, rhythm, relaxation, and correct bend the same basics you ride for, just without a rider. How a horse learns use their body correctly and build up muscle.

All of these interfere with the horseโ€™s mouth in ways most people donโ€™t actually think through.
Some people justify setups by saying itโ€™s the only way to control a horse while lunging. Thatโ€™s simply not true. These methods donโ€™t teach the horse they force it risk injury. If youโ€™re struggling to control a horse on the lunge, the solution isnโ€™t twisting ropes or clipping to the bit. Itโ€™s going back to basics, groundwork, proper voice, correct body position, and reschooling the horse on how to move forward, bend, and respond calmly. Real control comes from education, not shortcuts.

When you pull a line through the bit, youโ€™re not turning the horseโ€™s body, youโ€™re dragging the bit across the tongue and bars. Over the poll adds pressure behind the ears, which encourages the horse to tilt, brace, or lean rather than bend correctly. Looping it back creates a sliding, inconsistent pressure that changes every stride. The signals arenโ€™t clear or consistent, and the horse doesnโ€™t learn balance, it just learns to cope.

This is why Pony Club rules were so strict about lunging. When I was young, you had to lunge correctly, with the right equipment, or you didnโ€™t lunge at all. That was drilled in again and again, and the same standard followed me at Kildalton College (equine college) where the instructors were strict on it, itโ€™s BHS standard ( while BHS isnโ€™t great on some things, this is one that is). It wasnโ€™t about being picky, it was about understanding what lunging is for.

Which brings me to the big questionโ€ฆโ€ฆ..why donโ€™t people use proper lunging equipment anymore? Why has the lunging cavesson practically disappeared?

Because a cavesson was designed for this exact job.

It sits securely on the nose, doesnโ€™t twist, and gives a clear, even turning aid.

The ring on top allows you to influence the whole body evenly, encouraging correct bend through the spine instead of pulling the head.

The horse can chew, relax, and stretch, all things we want.

A headcollar or rope halter can be okay for lunging if itโ€™s fitted correctly. The key is that it must sit securely, stay in place, and give clear, consistent signals. Used properly, it wonโ€™t twist or interfere with the horseโ€™s mouth, and it can still allow for safe, effective lunging when a cavesson isnโ€™t available.

Then we add the bloody gadgets, side reins, pessoas, bungees often without understanding them and most people shoudnt be allowed near them! Fitted too short or used incorrectly, they restrict natural movement, load joints, and can injure the horseโ€™s muscles.

Poor lunging setup doesnโ€™t just confuse the horse it causes damage over timeโ€ฆ

๐๐ž๐œ๐ค ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ: twisting or leaning under pressure can create stiffness and tension.

๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€: restricted or uneven movement leads to tight, overworked muscles, sometimes even spasms.

๐—›๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€: if the horse leans or braces, the propulsive muscles arenโ€™t used correctly, leading to uneven development or strain.

๐—๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€: circles already load the inside legs; gadgets and head misalignment amplify that pressure, risking soreness or long-term injury.

Iโ€™ll admit Iโ€™ve been guilty of late lunging horses (not my own) in headcollars when the proper tools werenโ€™t available. I refuse to lunge on the bit, because the risks far outweigh any control you think youโ€™re gaining.

Lunging isnโ€™t about forcing an outline.
Itโ€™s about rhythm, balance, and relaxation.
If you canโ€™t achieve that with a cavesson, a lunge line, and your voice, adding ropes and gadgets wonโ€™t fix iT, it will only add tension and risk.

This isnโ€™t about being old school ( one traditional thing Iโ€™d keep)
Itโ€™s about not unlearning good horsemanship just because shortcuts became popular.

Why I No Longer Take Horses For Training?

When my career began twenty years ago, everything was different. I enjoyed riding horses and soon found a way I could get paid to do it. Fast forward a bit and I was working a steady job to pay the bills as I was building my business, and in the meantime was learning a lot, about horses certainly, but as much about people.

Horses are the easy part, people are not. Quite frankly, people are hard to please and at the same time are often unreasonable. I have met some great people because of horses, many were clients, but people are still the hardest part.

Here is a situation that played out enough that I have it memorized by word.

Client-I have a horse I need started.

Me-how old is it?

C-5 or 6, I really wanted it to mature before it was started and now I dont have the time.

Me-what will be changing in your schedule so that you can keep riding the horse when it comes home?

C-oh I will find the time. I just can't afford to get hurt right now.

Me-I can't either

Me- here is what I charge...per month, and I require 90 days

C-oh I can't afford that! What can I get for 30 days?

Me-........

C-and I want to be there everyday so that I can watch you and learn what you do. Can you work it everyday on my schedule?

If life was only this simple. The truth is that training horses is a very tough business. I have recently had numerous aspiring trainers reach out to me, which is great. But everyone needs to realize that that the industry needs to fix some things. If we dont do some things soon, I fear no one will be training horses in a decade, especially starting colts. And that is where I want to focus on.

We have too many people that have trained one or two and think they know everything and want to throw stones at everyone else that might do things differently. Then, what realistically needs to be charged to make the finances work is much more than most will pay. So why would a young person want to start something that takes considerable time to learn, doesn't pay much, and has a high risk of a short career?

So here is what I believe can be done. Take it or leave it.

Be reasonable, despite what you may think, ALL young, uneducated horses can have their moments. I know in the YouTube, TikTok age that doesnt happen, but in the real world it does.

Don't be cheap. It isn't the trainers responsibility to make horses affordable for you.

Understand that the process of training a horse is a VERY time consuming, thought out process filled with immense intentionality in everything and that doesn't end when you pick them up from the trainers.

And finally and most importantly, understand that horses are not programmable. Just because a trainer spends tons of time teaching a horse to do all the things, but you do everything differently they they did. You will get a different result. That wasnt and isn't the trainers fault. Ask the same way they did or expect something different.

I have just scratched the surface of the topic. Much more could, and maybe should be talked about. And to be fair the horror stories can be told from both the client and trainers perspective by many of you. So lets see if we can communicate better with each other and do our best to look at life from potentially others perspectives, not just our own, just like when we are working with our horses.
