The siege was finally lifted on April 6 when the cavalrymen linked up with the 9th Marines south of the Khe Sanh airstrip.
The Khe Sanh base reaches its record number of incoming rounds taken in a day - 1,307. Most are taken when a plane or chopper comes in, or if the NVA spotters up on Hill 1015 see a large group standing together. while U.S forces lost 1 KC-130, 3 C-123, 35 helicopter destroyed; 23 aircraft and 123 helicopter damaged[2 American casualties included 825 dead and 2,541 wounded. The relief effort to reach Khe Sanh was known as Operation Pegasus (April 1-14, 1968) and resulted in another 703 American deaths and 2,642 wounded. A north Vietnamese General once said once Operation Tec starts Khe Sanh will fall in 48 hrs.
For 77days 30,000north Vietnam’s surrounded Khe Sanh 300 incoming rounds per day (23,000)rounds Under the siege. The perimeter was tested 35 times a day. 4,000 beg to differ when the smoke cleared Khe Sanh was intact.
