Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful 4th of July from Nature’s Burial. 🇺🇸🌱

As we celebrate our nation’s independence, we honor the freedom to choose a legacy that gives back to the land. Every green burial here helps restore native prairie, protect wildlife, and preserve Texas’s natural beauty for generations to come.

Thank you for supporting conservation and remembrance in harmony with nature.

Our constructed wetlands at Blazing Star Prairie are absolutely loving the recent rainfall! 🌧️

As our Conservation Burial Coordinator Brittany Brand shares, this much-needed water is breathing life into the entire ecosystem. The surrounding prairie vegetation is beginning to bloom, and the wetlands have become a sanctuary for local wildlife.

🦆 Who calls these wetlands home?
While some birds were a little camera-shy in this video, this habitat regularly hosts beautiful shorebirds and waterfowl, including:
- Mottled ducks
- Black-necked stilts
- Killdeer

🍂 Looking ahead to migratory season
As the months roll on, we anticipate the arrival of spectacular migratory species! Later in the year, these wetlands will serve as a critical resting and nesting ground for Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes.

We are so proud of the progress and growth unfolding at Nature’s Burial. Want to come experience the beauty of the prairie for yourself? Follow us for updates on our public open houses and community events!

Welcome to Texas’ First Certified Conservation Cemetery! 🌿🌻

Did you know that within the 19,500-acre Katy Prairie Preserve lies a unique, 7.5-acre natural burial ground? Meet the Blazing Star Sanctuary, part of Nature’s Burial — a visionary project by the Coastal Prairie Conservancy.

As our Conservation Burial Coordinator Brittany Brand shares in the video, this beautiful “baby prairie” is the result of a dedicated 5-year restoration journey! By restoring local wetlands and revitalizing the soil, this flourishing landscape now supports vital pollinators, birds, and native wildlife.

Right now, it’s alive with vibrant native wildflowers like Black-eyed Susans, Indian Blanket, and Dog Fennel, with mature bunchgrasses on the way in the coming years. It’s a living testament to the power of conservation and a peaceful, natural final resting place.

Recently, Catharine Blair proposed to her partner, Shane Cowles, at Blazing Star Sanctuary.

Catharine is the founder of Beyond Legacy, an organization that helps individuals and families navigate end-of-life planning with dignity, compassion, and intention. Given her work, it felt especially meaningful that this milestone took place in a landscape dedicated to honoring both people and the natural world.

Catharine shared:
“As we walked through the prairie, it was exciting to witness the landscape transitioning with the season. The grasses swayed in the warm breeze, that wetlands had filled with rain, and everything seemed alive with quiet beauty. Then, as if nature itself wanted to mark the occasion, the heavens delivered a single, resounding thunderclap, one loud note of approval.

Congratulations to Catharine and Shane on their engagement. We are honored that Blazing Star Sanctuary was part of this special day.

We were honored to host Dr. Lisa George for a field research visit to Blazing Star Prairie, the 68-acre home of our conservation cemetery this week! A Research Associate with the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, she’s been at the forefront of quillwort research in Texas for 4 years now.

This quillwort was spotted by our Cemetery Manager, Bethany Foshee, in a restored wetland at Blazing Star Prairie several months ago. This ancient plant was not added by us during the restoration process, rather, it was part of the seed bank and popped up as restored wetland conditions have allowed it to thrive.

This research collaboration shows the power of restoration (and social media) to advance the forefronts of research!
