For many families, the back-to-school season means new backpacks, sharpened pencils, and big smiles at the bus stop. But for families with medically fragile children, this season can look a little different—filled with doctor clearances, medical plans, and quiet hopes for safety, routine, and joy.

As we celebrate the freedoms that define our nation, we’re reminded of the powerful freedoms we carry within ourselves—the freedom to choose joy, and the freedom to hold on to faith.

At MaKenna Cares, we see these choices in action every day. Families walking through the toughest of times continue to choose love, hope, and courage. On this day of national pride, we pause to honor that inner strength.

Today, we celebrate what would have been MaKenna’s 6th birthday—a day we chose with intention and pride. Born on June 19, 2019, MaKenna’s arrival holds special meaning for our family, as we selected this date in honor of Juneteenth—a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Black families.

Though her time with us was brief, MaKenna’s impact is everlasting. Through the MaKenna Cares Foundation, we carry forward her spirit by supporting families with critically ill children and spreading compassion wherever we can.

Here, we share a special photo from MaKenna’s 1st birthday—even COVID couldn’t stop us from celebrating such a huge milestone for our warrior girl.

As we remember her today, we ask you to take a moment to pray for all the children who are spending their birthdays in hospitals and under medical care. Every child deserves to feel celebrated, supported, and deeply loved.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the incredible strength of dads and father-figures who stand beside their children during life’s toughest battles—especially those walking through the journey of medical challenges.

Whether it's holding a tiny hand in the hospital, sleeping in waiting room chairs, or offering silent strength in moments of uncertainty—your love, resilience, and unwavering presence inspire us all.

Yesterday marked two years since our daughter Makenna entered heaven. ✨

In honor of her life and legacy, we spent the day doing what she inspired us to do—serving others. We provided lunch (and lots of smiles!) to families at the Ronald McDonald House inside Texas Children’s Hospital – Main Campus.

RMHC was a lifeline for us during Makenna’s many months at TCH—offering warm meals, a place to rest, and most importantly, hope. It’s an honor to now be on the giving side, bringing comfort to families walking a journey we know all too well.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission. Because of you, Makenna’s light continues to shine. 💜
