Western Railway Preservation Society

Western Railway Preservation Society We are a working museum. We encourage new VOLUNTEERS
to join us.

The Western Railway Preservation Society is dedicated to preserving the skills and artifacts of our western railway heritage, with particular attention given to the narrow gauge railways that were once very common through the west. We lay track, restore antique narrow gauge railroad equipment, and are happy to help new people of all ages learn to do what we do. You can learn some of the history of how important railroads have been in the building of the western United States.

Here's a photo of ballast being loaded for completing Track 2 in our virtual building.
Recently we have been working on West Side Lumber caboose 3, now at Brooks. Here we are disassembling the trucks to inspect the bolsters before placing the caboose body.
The next photo shows us removing the steel from the bolsters, to see their condition. Fortunately they are in great shape, with only a few minor repairs. Then comes sealing & priming the wood.
The steel will be reassembled & the caboose body put back on.

Yesterday we continued ballasting on track 2. Due to a narrow area next to the track we couldn't turn the tractor & dump the ballast in. We had a spare cart frame so we put plywood on top. We could then load from the end, push the cart down the track & shovel the ballast where needed.

This last week we went to McEwen to empty out machines, tools, & material from our loaned shop there (thank you Sumpter Valley RR) and prepare the caboose for transport. The caboose & original cupola (which will be redone at Brooks), are staged next to the shop. We brought 1 truck over, the next time we will get the second truck, caboose body, & cupola.
Here you see the caboose off its trucks, carried next to the shop, & covered for storage for a few weeks.

Here's what we've been doing lately:
Laying track going into the curve at the NW corner.
Also: installing Track 2 which is inside our (virtual for now) building.
This track will store a caboose we've been restoring and some track speeders.
