Kensington Dog Run Association

The Kensington Dog Run Association is a 501C3 nonprofit group of neighbors who championed for a dog run in the Parade Grounds at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. The designated area for the dog run is located on Coney Island Avenue at Kermit Place, between Parkside and Caton Avenues. The dog run will accommodate the increasing number of dogs and dog owners in the neighborhoods surrounding the

proposed location. According to the NYC Department of Health, the areas surrounding the proposed dog run site currently have a combination of 19,756 canines. Dog runs, which allow dogs to roam off-leash, offer the opportunity for dogs to exercise and interact with other dogs. This produces well­-behaved, non­-aggressive dogs and add a positive aspect to the community. Currently, many dog owners are unable to take advantage of the limited hours of the Prospect Park off-leash area. The community needs a fenced-in area for unleashed dogs with longer, more accessible hours. Support is strong among neighbors, who backed the dog run proposal with several hundred petition signatures. The petition helped grab the attention and support of our local leaders who agreed to share funding responsibilities for a dog run. Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams; Council Member, Mathieu Eugene; and Council Member, Brad Lander; are all currently engaged in making our proposed project a reality. Thanks to the Prospect Park Alliance and NYC Parks Department, we will break ground on the dog run in late June 2019 with anticipated completion in Summer 2020.
