Repost: On this day, the NAACP was founded with one goal: to advance and protect civil rights and justice for all.

117 years later, that mission still stands.

Happy NAACP Founders’ Day.

“You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea.” - Myrlie Evers Williams 🙌🏽

At the NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter, we believe that education must be rooted in the full integrity of our history. Recently, federal administrative shifts have sought to remove specific, vital language from Mr. Evers’s story, specifically proposing to remove the word “racist” from brochures at the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument in reference to the white supremacist who murdered Mr. Evers.

We respond with resilience and an unyielding power of the written word. 📚✨

To truly uplift our youth and honor the Evers family, we must use the language that accurately reflects their sacrifice. We cannot teach the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement without acknowledging the specific forces that Mr. Evers overcame.

The NAACP Medgar Evers College 7-Book Selection serves as our commitment to preserving the truth. These books provide the context, the vocabulary, and the courage our students need to carry the legacy forward.

The Selection:

1️⃣ The Autobiography of Medgar Evers | His writings, letters, and speeches.
2️⃣ For Us, the Living | by Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams & William Peters
3️⃣ Watch Me Fly | by Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams & Melinda Blau
4️⃣ Medgar & Myrlie | by Joy-Ann Reid
5️⃣ Medgar Evers: Mississippi Martyr | by Michael Vinson Williams
6️⃣ Remembering Medgar Evers | by Minrose C. Gwin
7️⃣ A Voice of Hope: The Myrlie Evers-Williams Story | by Nadia Salomon

We invite you to read with us, honoring the past by refusing to diminish it.

Incomparable, honorable, legendary.

The true standard, founded in service, defined by excellence, ethical development and historic contributions to humankind; redefining the pursuit of liberty and fulfilling the promise of this nation’s creed. We stand in solidarity through acknowledgment of the truth. Divisive narratives and lies are always silenced when the truth comes to light.

Earlier this month, James Viafara, NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter President and Mali Gibbs, Chairman of Education Innovation for the NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter and Chapter Co-Advisor Joanna Dorsey, (not pictured), joined the New York State Conference of NAACP Branches’ Youth & College Division for the First Quarterly Meeting of the 2026 calendar year.

This convening brings great strength and unity to the movement, with numerous youth leaders across New York State who were formally sworn in as Executive Committee members. Youth gathered on behalf of their Youth Councils, High-school and College Chapters to champion change.
