Laura Peterson is the Artistic Director of Open Arts Studio, a Brooklyn based nonprofit arts organization. Laura’s work is deeply influenced by the visual art of the 1970’s and since 2007, has included visually stunning installations that are developed simultaneously with the choreography. Her work frequently employs repetition, iteration, and mathematical patterns as a means of expanding her conc
epts. Each dance is an environment, a concept; highly refined and rigorously researched. Laura Peterson Choreography has had residencies and commissions throughout New York and other cities. She was an Artist In Residence at the HERE Arts Center where her work Wooden was premiered in 2011. Laura received Temple University’s Reflection/Response Commission in 2012, and has created work at the Queens Museum of Art, Dance New Amsterdam (NYC), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council as a Swing Space Artist and created a dance for 28 performers for the Sitelines series at NYC’s River-to-River Festival. Her choreography has been produced throughout NYC, internationally in Europe and South America, and in the US at venues including Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Inside/Out, and many others. In 2012, she created dances for visual artist Nick Cave’s Soundsuits in conjunction with Boise Art Museum and Balance Dance Company. Laura has been commissioned by Pennsylvania Ballet, Hartford Ballet, DROP Dance and has made dances for Princeton University, Hunter College, NYU’s Tisch Dance Department and Lehman College. She teaches dance and improvisation in NYC at the Mark Morris Dance Center, Dance New Amsterdam and currently is a Guest Artist at the Mason Gross School of the Arts Dance Department at Rutgers University. Laura’s performance credits include Julie Taymor’s film, Across The Universe, choreographed by Daniel Ezralow. She has performed with Poppo & the GoGo Boys, Risa Jaroslow & Dancers, Paule Turner’s court (Philadelphia), Group Motion Dance Co (Philadelphia), Asimina Chremos (Chicago, Philadelphia), Eun Jung Choi (NYC), and many others. Laura has taught dance technique, improvisation and composition at Princeton University, Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, CUNY Lehman College, Rowan University and Western Connecticut State University. She is a returning faculty member at the Balance Dance Company in Boise, ID, a pre-professional dance company. Laura has been on the faculty at Dance New Amsterdam and has taught technique at 100 Grand in New York City. Laura holds an MFA in Dance from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received a Fellowship in Dance History and a BFA with honors in Modern Dance from University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
