April 21, 2021
Portrait Artist Rusty Zimmerman is painting a portrait of a place through its people by giving oil-painted portraits and recording oral histories with reside
nts of the Chelsea Elliott Houses, curated by the Hudson Guild and funded by Google. Zimmerman will paint a number of residents portraits from live from May - July of 2021, inviting local venues to display the work as it emerges, and showing the entire collection in July 2021. Upon completion of the project and subsequent exhibitions, the artist will give the paintings to their subjects for FREE. We are working with the Hudson Guild to curate a collection of subjects to accurately reflect the community at large. About The Free Portrait Project
The Free Portrait Project: Crown Heights creates a portrait of a place through its people. Founded in 2015, artist Rusty Zimmerman painted 200 portraits to residents of Crown Heights, Brooklyn in one year, rendering a physical record of the community in that moment. In doing so, Zimmerman explores the commonality of seemingly disparate communities within one neighborhood, crafts a time capsule amid gentrification and rapidly shifting demographics, promotes community engagement and up-ends the tradition of portraiture being reserved for the wealthy few by giving these paintings to their subjects at no cost. About Rusty Zimmerman
