Juneteenth is a time to honor freedom, family, and Black history, and books are a powerful way to help children understand and celebrate this meaningful holiday. Whether you're reading at home, in the classroom, or during circle time, these stories spark curiosity, joy, and important conversations.

Here are three beautiful books that introduce Juneteenth in a way young readers can connect with and enjoy. ❤️🖤💚

Jayylen’s Juneteenth Surprise: Jayylen is full of curiosity as his Paw Paw gets ready for the yearly Juneteenth celebration. In this Little Golden Book, he discovers the history of the holiday through music, and starts thinking about planning a special Freedom Day surprise of his own.

The Story of Juneteenth: This board book is a fantastic read for toddlers and preschoolers. It connects historical events to how Juneteenth is celebrated today. Although short in word count, it’s chock full of thoughtful information to help young readers understand why we celebrate this holiday.

Juneteenth Is: Juneteenth is deeply rooted in the power of family and community. “Juneteenth Is” shines a light on the happiness of celebrating together, the struggle for Black freedom, and the importance of honoring Black history as American history.

Happy Caribbean American Heritage Month!

Caribbean American Heritage Month was officially recognized in 2006 after years of advocacy led by Dr. Claire Nelson and the Institute of Caribbean Studies. Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduced the legislation, which was later passed by Congress and proclaimed into recognition by President George W. Bush. Since then, June has been celebrated as a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions Caribbean people have made throughout the United States and across the world.

This month, we celebrate the rich cultures, history, traditions, and contributions of Caribbean communities that continue to shape and strengthen neighborhoods across New York City and beyond. From music and food to language, storytelling, and family traditions, Caribbean culture brings vibrancy, connection, and joy to our communities and helps make New York City such a special place for children and families 💛

Your child’s mental health matters every day... not just during difficult moments.

For young children, emotional well-being is nurtured through everyday connection, consistency, and support.

Small moments, like listening with patience, keeping routines predictable, and helping children name their feelings, can make a big difference in how they learn to manage challenges and feel secure.

When big emotions show up, it can help to pause before reacting and ask yourself, “What is my child trying to tell me right now?”

Big feelings are part of growing up. With comfort, guidance, and understanding, children begin to feel safe, seen, and supported.

At Friends of Crown Heights, we believe every child deserves the care and connection they need to grow with confidence.

What if small moments of self-care could make your day feel a little easier?

This month, we are sharing simple ways to support both you and your child during busy days. Small changes can help bring more ease and comfort into your routine.

Here are a few ways to get started!

• Start the day gently with a few quiet minutes for yourself, then greet your child with a calm tone, a smile, or a cuddle

• Keep mornings simple and predictable. A steady routine can help your child feel more at ease and make the day start more smoothly

• Use drop off and pick up as a time to connect. A hug, eye contact, or a few reassuring words can go a long way

• Stay hydrated and keep easy snacks on hand for both you and your child to help keep your energy up

• Keep evenings calm with a simple routine that helps your child wind down after a long day

These small moments can really add up over time.
