Exactly a year after a fire ruined Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s home in Red Hook, its artists are reflecting on how the blaze has changed their lives and their work as they prepare to close a difficult chapter.

“One Year Later: New Work, New Perspectives,” featuring the work of dozens of BWAC member artists, opened on Sept. 17 at Whale in Sunset Park, along with a national juried exhibition titled “Exclaim!”

“The whole thing about showing the work that got quote-unquote ruined, I want people to see it. I want people to see what happened, and then we can move on,” said BWAC president Alicia Degener. “Let’s close the book on it. You know, it’s been a year. What have we done? We found other places to exhibit. We’re re-finding ourselves. We’re reinventing ourselves.”

Tonight is a special night. It will mark the one-year anniversary of the Red Hook fire, from which we are still recovering. In a strong sign of that recovery, it marks the opening of our fall Members Show, One Year Later: New Work, New Perspectives, at our temporary space at the Whale building.

We have so much art to share, and we hope you will show up in a big way for our members. Many people are unaware of the affordability of many of our pieces, so here are only a few examples of works that are under $300! If something sticks out to you, consider supporting our artists by taking home a piece home. Art represents their voice, their perspectives, their experiences, and journey in this crazy world.
