🐟OKO FARMS AT HONEY’S🐟

We are so excited to announce that Oko Farms will be farming from the rooftop of Honey’s Brooklyn, in addition to our greenhouse in Flatbush this upcoming season!

Honey’s, a long-time pillar of East Williamsburg/Bushwick, has been a deeply cherished and supportive partner of ours for many years. We look forward to growing, teaching, and coming together in a space so aligned in our mission to build community resilience. And as our first time farming on a rooftop, we are eager to continue to show our community the adaptability and resilience of aquaponics farming, no matter the setting.

We look forward to seeing you on the rooftop and stay tuned for our SUMMER PROGRAMMING CALENDAR, going live soon!!!

🧶Last Wednesday, we held the first workshop in our Hand Spinning Cotton series. Participants learned how to prepare cotton for spinning by removing the seeds, a process known as ginning. We practiced ginning using our hands and simple tools such as a stick and pasta maker. We discovered the pasta maker can be an accessible and inexpensive cotton gin. Participants also began learning the foundational skill of hand spinning.

Alongside the hands-on work, we explored the important role fiber crops played in ancient civilizations, where people cultivated and processed fibers alongside edible crops. Hand spinning, whether done with the fingers or a simple stick, was such a regular part of daily life that it could be compared to the way many of us constantly interact with our phones today.
We’re excited to welcome everyone back for part two of the series, where we’ll introduce spinning with the Indian tahkli spindle🧶

Tiger nuts also called earth almonds or chuffa are a nutritious alternative to nuts easy to grow. Similar to peanuts, they grow underground, and produce tiny tubers that look and taste like nuts.
