Thanksgiving Tips

The last few weeks have been especially challenging for anyone living a balanced life. Hurricane Sandy and the subsequent Nor’easter extolled death and destruction in its wake and created new stressors for us to manage in our already hectic lives.

Many women mentioned to me that during the week of Hurricane Sandy they “didn’t do so well.” The underlying message—not enough exercise and eating a bit too much indulgence in our favorite comfort foods.

This is understandable. Living a healthy, balanced life doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. But it does mean that when you slip a little you don’t use that as an excuse to give up completely. Every day is a new chance to start again.

Thanksgiving is no exception. You can still practice healthy living habits and enjoy your holiday meal. Here are a few tips for tomorrow.

• Make exercise a part of your day. Wake up a little earlier than usual and go for a walk or do several sets of strength-training exercises like squats and bicep curls while watching the parade.
• Have a piece of fruit or a granola bar before going out or before guests arrive to take the edge off your appetite.
• Bring a salad or vegetable-based soup to make sure there are lots of veggies for you to choose from. When you sit down at the table, remember the plate method and put the vegetables on your plate first.
• Eat slowly—savor the flavor of the food and enjoy good conversation with your friends and family.
• Go ahead and have dessert! Try taking three bites and see if that’s enough to satisfy your sweet tooth.
• On Friday, go for another workout before you dive into those leftovers!
