AN IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Jammins Again - Chaka Khan & Vivian Green at Kings Theatre
By Gerry Hopkin
Brooklyn, NYC; Feb. 17, 2016 -- "The concert, 'An Evening with Diva Chaka Khan & Special Guest Vivian Green,' carded for Friday, February 19, will only be the latest and certainly not the last, in the Jammins Events line of quality productions at upscale venues," says the Caribbean-American, US military veteran, George Crooks, who launched his career in cultural promotions, while still a college student in his 20s, over three decades ago.
"Music lovers are in for a major treat from a sister whose awesome career spans four decades and includes 10 Grammy Awards and 22 nominations," observes recording artiste Cheryl V, whose versatile singing is strongly influenced by the veteran diva.
Born Yvette Marie Stevens, Chaka Khan is not only an exceptional vocalist, but also a distinguished songwriter. Considered the Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan made her debut singing in groups -- first the Babysitters (which was originally Baby Huey and the Babysitters) and then Rufus, which preceded her solo career, which she launched in 1978 with an album that included the crossover disco hit song, "I'm every Woman."
Notably, through the years thus far, she has given the musical world other unforgettable hits such as "What cha Gonna Do for Me," "Chaka Khan," "I Feel for You," "I'll Be Good to You," "The Woman I Am," "Summertime," "Whats Going On" and "Funk This."
In terms of genres, Khan sings funk, disco, R&B and Jazz.
About Jammins
Previously, Jammins events have been held at various world-class venues at multiple locations, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Hammerstein Ballroom, the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre, the Atlanta Civic Centre, the Bushnell Performing Arts Centre and the Barclays Centre.
"More Caribbean and African-American cultural artistes and bands are being staged at upscale venues more frequently, thanks to the creative and daunting efforts of Crooks and his Jammins Events team, one of the leading event-planning and production entities offering the finest in Caribbean and African-American cultural performances," observes recording artiste Keisha Martin, who has performed at, and attended, several Jammins events over the years.
Supported by the dedicated Lorraine Campbell and his forward-looking African-American associate Craig Freeman, George Crooks, through Jammins Events, has been consistently delivering quality cultural events, concept-wise, since it's inception.
What started small some three decades ago with low budget shows and dances, then themed events like Jammins on the Bay, and later evolved to venue management, has now grown into a quality event-planning and promotion enterprise.
"Quality promoted Caribbean-American and African-American Concerts at the finest upscale venues, one after another, to the immense pleasure of mixed audiences, is the trademark or brand of Jammins Events," says Crooks.
From the Brooklyn Music Festival to the Legends of Soul & Reggae; from Sounds of Reggae to Singers in Action; from Reggae Jazz Festival to the Manhattans and Rose Royce; from Patti LaBelle to The Temptations; from Marcia Griffith to Gregory Isaacs; from Inner Circle to Machel Montana and Kes the Band; from Beres Hammond to Billy Ocean; from Maxi Priest to Sanchez; from Third World to Shaggy & Ky-Mani Marley -- the Jammins record of showcasing and deepening the appreciation of our culture, is one that speaks for itself.
Part of the proceeds of all Jammins productions are donated to the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (afuwi), which supports UWI students through scholarships, grants and special projects.
