In the lush backyard of , we chat with Mariarosa, Mari for short. The concept for Sottocasa began with Luca Arrigoni with the support of Antonio Capone, but it was not long before Mari joined the team as co-owner and manager, and the restaurant opened in Brooklyn in 2011.🍕
Mari first came to the USA to visit a close friend in Buffalo, but after visiting New York City, fell in love with the energy and the notion of reinventing herself here. “I said, I’ll go back to Italy and I’ll sell everything I have. I’ll grab Zorba, who’s my cat, and I’ll come to New York. Everyone was like ‘You’re crazy! You don’t speak any English! You don’t have a job!’” Things worked out: Mari has now been a New Yorker for 16 years, and still has Zorba.
Mari is partial to the Neapolitan style pizza, but has come to love New York style pizza. “I was very skeptical at the beginning. But then one day after the gym, I tried a New York slice, and I was very satisfied about it. Pizza is universal.”
“I’m a big fan of the Mariolina, because I created it after me because when I was little, they called me Mariolina, so I created the Mariolina: pickled jalapeno, spicy honey, and spicy capocollo. I’ve been having pizza almost every day for the last 16 years. I never regret pizza.” Mari is proud to say that Sottocasa’s secret is consistency and always using high quality ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, Farina Caputo, and mozzarella fior di latte.
Mari recently hired artist 🎨to beautify the entryway of Sottocasa with a new and vibrant mural for the community to enjoy, “It sums up our being Italian and proudly Brooklynite.” Looking back, Mari says, “When I moved to New York, I changed so many things and I think that taught me that change is good. I understood my true self had value no matter where I am. That’s the great education that New York gave me.”
Make sure you visit Sottocasa this summer and try their authentic Neopolitan style pizzas and delicious spritzes!
