The Brooklyn NAACP

The Brooklyn NAACP Brooklyn Branch of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ( NAACP ) The Brooklyn Branch of the NAACP was established in 1920.

It was a year of turmoil and pervasive lynching of African-American men. The first meeting of the Brooklyn NAACP, held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in December 1920, was an anti-lynching meeting. Attending that meeting was Congressman Leonidas C. Dyer of Missouri, who introduced the Anti-Lynching Bill in Congress. Also present was Senator Joseph Frank of Maryland, an unwavering anti-lynching c

ampaigner. Over the years, the Brooklyn Branch has gained a reputation as one of the largest, most effective and influential branches of the NAACP. At its peak, the branch had a membership of some 10,000. The Brooklyn Branch is poised to reclaim this rich history with its restructuring. Since its reorganization in June 2005, the branch has emerged with a young and committed leadership. This leadership is determined to build on the branch’s rich legacy of activism and defending the social, economic, political and legal rights of people of color.

We Remember

Today, on Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, commitment, and love of country have secured the freedoms we cherish and the rights we continue to fight to protect. We also hold in our hearts the families who carry the enduring weight of that sacrifice. Your strength and resilience are a testament to their legacy.

As we reflect, we must also recognize those who continue to serve in harm’s way, including in today’s conflicts and emerging global tensions. Their willingness to stand in defense of our nation reminds us that the cost of freedom is ongoing. Let us honor their service not only with words, but through our commitment to justice, equity, and unity in the communities we serve.

Brooklyn NAACP Statement on Bushwick Shooting: Standing for Justice, Healing & Safety

Brooklyn NAACP is heartbroken and outraged by the tragic shooting in Bushwick that left a 7-month-old young child hospitalized before she succumbed her injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kaori Patterson-Moore, her family, and the entire community as we face yet another painful reminder of how deeply gun violence hurts us all.

“When a child is caught in gunfire, it is not just one life shattered, it is a community wounded,” said Joan Alexander-Bakiriddin, President of the Brooklyn NAACP. “We cannot become numb to this. Our response must be love, action, and accountability.”

We are calling for:

• Real gun reform to keep illegal fi****ms out of our neighborhoods.

• Investment in our youth — safe third spaces, mentorship, jobs, and mental health support.

• Healing for our communities — trauma care, peace circles, and space to grieve and rebuild.

• Collaboration and accountability between residents, leaders, and law enforcement to build trust and lasting safety.
Brooklyn’s strength is our unity. Let us turn pain into purpose — together.
