A Vision (by Wendell Berry)

If we will have the wisdom to survive,
to stand like slow growing trees
on a ruined place, renewing, enriching it...
then a long time after we are dead
the lives our lives prepare will live
here, their houses strongly placed
upon the valley sides...
The river will run
clear, as we will never know it...
On the steeps where greed and ignorance cut down
the old forest, an

old forest will stand,
its rich leaf-fall drifting on its roots. The veins of forgotten springs will have opened. Families will be singing in the fields...
Memory,
native to this valley, will spread over it
like a grove, and memory will grow
into legend, legend into song, song
into sacrament. The abundance of this place,
the songs of its people and its birds,
will be health and wisdom and indwelling
light. This is no paradisal dream. Its hardship is its reality.

Is there hypocrisy in NYC's planning and policies addressing "climate vulnerable" areas, especially since Ida?
Hundreds, and hundreds of homes well up hill from the Gowanus Canal, on both banks, were flooded during Ida, yet NYC marches on with intentions to rezone the low lands along Gowanus for housing, land that was under 12 feet of water during Storm Sandy.
We are all still waiting on Climate impact analysis for this rezoning and an answer to the question, what will happen when flood levels make coming & going from these buildings difficult? What will be come of buildings built under the rezone when you can't get to-and-from them? Who will be responsible fro removing them from the Public Waters then?

The de Blasio administration wants Congress to fund a voluntary buyout program modeled on efforts launched after Superstorm Sandy, which hit nine years ago this week. The devastation wrought Sept. 1 by Ida has spurred calls to re-up the "managed retreat" strategy.

FROGG is so very great full to Simeon for his amazing and helpful support he and HDC brought to our Gowanus community over the many years of directorship at HDC. His program, Six To Celebrate, featured and helped celebrate the important history here in our Gowanus landscape. His support of FROGG member, Linda Mariano, was essential in aiding our recordation of Gowanus History which still sits before NY SHIPO for their consideration.

City Planning's Envirnomental Impact Statement for the 80 block Gowanus rezoning has flawed data acording to an EPA revies, which is why the conclusions drawn from the FEIS are without standing. The EPA also asked that the EIS look at the consequenses of this huge rezoning as known climate impacts hit this area over the comming decades when people the rezoning would have 20,000 additional people living at the bottom of this coastal drainage basin.

August 27: Not just the current Battle of Brooklyn taking place over Gowanus, but also battles remembered. Back then it was the waters of Gowanus that turned the tide of that battle. Today it looks like it may once again be the waters of the Gowanus that will be a major factor in settling the current Battle of Brooklyn...

The annual family-friendly day of demonstrations, music and re-enactments memorializing the Battle of Brooklyn returns this year with an in-person event.
