Welcome back! The Flavors of Fujian Dinner returns ★

Following the success of last year’s sold-out dinner, we’re so thrilled to present another curated menu featuring recipes and stories from our ongoing cookbook project, Flavors of Fujian

For over a year, Jess (NYC-based food writer) and Allen (co-founder of Fuzhou America) have embarked on a deeply personal cultural project. After extensively traveling China and the US, and interviewing dozens of Fujianese — artisans with a mastery of street food, talented family home cooks, and an acclaimed chef so renowned for his elaborate banquets that he recently came out of retirement (!!) — they’re excited to answer questions and share their always evolving process.

Come to this dinner (one night only, two seatings) and hear about our experience conducting culinary research in Fuzhou, capturing New York’s Chinatowns in motion, and mingling with likeminded food writers in China. There will be storytelling, wok-fire cooking, and cups overflowing with Fujianese rice wine. Menu dropping soon, so stay tuned!

WHERE
📍 Nin Hao Restaurant, 609 Dean St, Brooklyn, NY 11238

WHEN [Two Seatings]
★ Thursday 5/7 5:30PM
★ Thursday 5/7 8:15PM

Dinner Set [$68]
☆ 1 glass of YABA rice wine

☆ 1 dessert

10% of ticket sales will be donated to CAAAV, an organization that supports working class Asian immigrants.

Many thanks to Nin Hao, a Brooklyn neighborhood restaurant known for serving Chinese comfort food, especially inventive takes on traditional Fujianese dishes. Currently, they are pouring the ONLY FULLY Chinese wine list in New York City.

NEW RECIPE 🍜💫 PEANUT BUTTER NOODLES - FUZHOU BAN MIAN 福州拌面

We’re proud to share a recipe in for what we like to call the gateway dish into Fuzhounese cuisine. Slicked with soy sauce, melted peanut butter, garlic oil, and lard, these 10-minute glossy noodles are savory, nutty, and extra slurpable. Plus, we believe this version can stand up to cult favorites found across New York and east coast Chinatowns, Fuzhou, and perhaps wishfully, those on FJ dining tables.

To land on this specific recipe, Allen and Jess sampled over a dozen bowls of noodles and poked our heads into busy kitchens in New York and China. We even debated the best type of noodle texture (Allen likes his thick and textured, while Jess prefers hers glossy, hot, and slurpable) and the favored peanut butter (Jess is firmly in camp Skippy).

Thank you to our dear friends Christina Chen , Diane Yeung, for chatting with us about this truly delicious noodle.

& special thanks to (and fellow to noodle evangelist) for your edits and .photography for the drool worthy photos.

Our next event is a collaboration with for an interactive exploration of mental well-being, ancestral practices, and self-healing 💆‍♀️

There is a growing interest in our generation to learn more about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which offers ancient techniques and practical tools for regulating modern emotional life. Much of Chinese medicine seeks to address the root of our health issues instead of finding solutions that only temporarily alleviate pain ❤️

In this 2-hour workshop, we will start with an overview of TCM and its overarching philosophy. Then we’ll discuss how this way of living can help you regulate mindfulness through food, improve gut health and digestion, and increase the flow of energy through acupressure and gua sha.

Tea and snacks will be served, followed by a book signing after the session!

Date: 11/23 Sunday

Time: 2PM-4PM

Food is one of the primary ways we stay connected to our heritage.

For the past six months, Jess and Allen have been collaborating on a Fujianese cookbook to preserve age-old recipes and share the stories behind each dish.

Fujianese cuisine, alongside other regional Chinese traditions, has been expanding rapidly in the U.S. In New York, the flavors of Fujian, Sichuan, Hunan, and Guangdong are easy to find, but the histories behind those dishes are less familiar.

People flock to Shu Jiao Fuzhou for the best dumplings and peanut butter noodles. But how did this family-run business make the journey from Tantou, a town in Changle, Fuzhou?

This cookbook is rooted, first and foremost, in our Fuzhou America and Chinatown community. We aim to document recipes and celebrate the voices of the chefs and restaurant owners running kitchens across the country.

Allen is a cofounder of Fuzhou America and a Qinghong brewer. Jess is an editor at Serious Eats and has written for Eater, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.

Come listen to their talk this Saturday at TALK TOO MUCH 2025 🔥

ONE OF OUR BEST EVENTS EVER!!

Six years ago, we founded Fuzhou America to create a space for FJs to meet one another and connect. Growing up, many of us had isolating experiences as we were constantly pulled in different directions. When it’s choosing between joining an after school program or leaving school to help our family restaurant with the dinner rush, it’s never easy. Fuzhou America, we believed, could be a community where people could be proudly FJ and share our stories.

Nin Hao is an awesome restaurant. It’s holding down traditional Fujianese flavors while simultaneously expanding the cuisine with other Chinese influences. There’s the classic Chinese beef Wellington we all know and love. Then they spice up traditional Rouyan and with a tingly Sichuan chili oil.

Beyond telling food stories through his restaurant, Evan is creating a similar, tight-knit space for his staff and customers. Every time you talk with him, you can immediately feel his sincere love for the culture and food, and his passion to share it with the world.

GO EAT HERE AND SUPPORT OUR PEOPLE @❤️🔥🫂🙏😭🫶
