CAE is celebrating our 50th Anniversary on May 9th, and we hope you’ll join us at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to honor the New Yorkers who made us who we are today – and usher in a new era of community care. CAE is excited to announce we will be honoring Annie Ellman, our co-founder and former Executive Director, for her long-standing commitment to a safer world for all. Discounted Early Bird Tickets are on sale now: https://bit.ly/CAE50tix

Over the last five decades, the Center for Anti-Violence Education has empowered tens of thousands of New Yorkers to prevent, disrupt, and heal from violence in our communities. We were founded as Brooklyn Women’s Martial Arts in 1974 by Annie Ellman and Nadia Telsey, two radical feminist le***an martial artists. Without a permanent location, they held self-defense workshops in living rooms, rental spaces, street fairs, and rallies. Beginning with a core of self-defense for women, CAE soon branched out to working with young people to prevent violence and address the intersections of different forms of oppression. Our founders organized support for Black women prosecuted for fighting back against attackers. To this day, our programming centers the experiences of people most targeted by sexual, gender, and hate-based violence.

In 2023, we served more than 4,000 New Yorkers across all five boroughs. This year, we are collaborating with vulnerable New Yorkers – especially those from migrant, q***r, and Black and Brown communities – to rise up against the tidal wave of hate violence threatening all of us. Joining us at our Spring Benefit will keep making this work possible.

As we prepare for our 50th anniversary next year, we thank you for joining our mission to prevent, disrupt, and heal from hate violence.

2023 has been a year of incredible transformation for CAE. We have expanded our team, and hired our new Executive Director, Rama Issa-Ibrahim. As we find our new shape, we are deepening our commitments to the New York City community together by:

1. expanding our collaborative work with Black and Brown communities
2. finding new ways to meet young people in today's landscape and;
3. working in coalition to strengthen community-based support to migrants and asylum seekers.

Today we ask for your help in raising $150,000 to support our organization in this time of change. Please consider donating to our Giving Tuesday campaign: http://bit.ly/caebkgives

Join us Wednesday, February 1st for our Monthly Upstander workshop! This month we will roll out our brand new workshop, Upstander 201: Building Beloved Community.

Research has shown that having no community response to hate will be interpreted as acceptance by the perpetrators, the public and — worse — the targets. Communities across the U.S. have come up with many creative strategies to send the message of love and support to targets while holding the line on hate. We explore the range of possibilities for small or large community action to interrupt systemic hate while leading with dignity, compassion and love. With so much going on in our world, It can be overwhelming to figure out what action to take. We examine our personal strengths and potential roles in interrupting systemic and ideological hate, from weavers, to healers, to front-line responders.
