Tomorrow's Leaders NYC

Tomorrow's Leaders NYC Tomorrow’s Leaders NYC mission is to help over-age students overcome social, emotional, and academic challenges to become positive and productive leaders

Why we are needed:
• Students who are retained are more likely to drop out of school in comparison to students who are never retained. Grade retention is one of the most useful predictors of a high school dropout.
• Currently, there is not an organization that is designed to meet the needs, interests, and concerns of over-age middle school students.
• In 2010, nearly 72,900 students did not gradu

ate from New York’s high schools; the lost lifetime earnings in New York for that class of dropouts alone totals nearly $19 billion.
•In the 2009-2010 school year, the NYC DOE reported over 1,600 over-age students in District 19 (the “East New York" school district), the most in the entire city.
• In 2008, there were a reported 777 juvenile arrests of youth ages 16 and under in East New York, the third highest in the city.
• New York’s economy could see a combination of savings (related to crime) and additional revenue of about $457 million each year if the population of male high school students increased by only 5 percent.
• Based on 2011 state exam test scores, District 19 ranks near the bottom of the 32 New York City school districts.
