Renewal

Renewal A Comprehensive Resource for Kidney Donors and Recipients He met the man by chance in a office. He said that what he needed was a kidney.

Renewal was founded by Mendy Reiner in 2006, after an experience he had helping find a kidney for a stranger. At first, Mendy thought the man, who had swollen eyes and limbs, was looking for a tzedaka donation and offered him money, but the man refused. Mendy placed an advertisement in a local newspaper — “Father of 5, blood type O, needs a kidney” — and included his own phone number. He received

dozens of responses, both from people offering to help and from people asking for help finding a kidney.

Nine years ago, Yoely Klein received a kidney transplant from his brother.

What makes the story even more incredible:
his brother kept the donation a secret until the very last second.

Today, nine years later, Yoely is healthy, grateful, and thriving.

Sometimes the greatest gifts arrive quietly.
And sometimes they continue changing a life long after surgery ends.

“Hodu Lashem.”

At Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, a woman was preparing to donate her kidney to someone she had never met.

But she wasn’t alone.

Also standing there were previous donors:
one who donated 3 years ago, and another who donated just 4 weeks ago.

Not because they had to be there.
Because they wanted to support the next person saying yes.

This is one of the most beautiful parts of the Renewal family:
donors inspiring donors.
Strangers becoming community.
And acts of kindness continuing long after surgery ends.

Two days after donating his kidney, this father got the best kind of hospital visit:
his children running into the room to see him.

One day, they’ll fully understand what their father chose to do.

They’ll understand that he went through surgery, pain, and recovery so another person could keep living.

And they’ll remember that kindness is not just something you talk about.
It’s something you live.

This is how compassion gets passed from one generation to the next.

At the Satmar Business Expo, the Renewal booth became more than just another stop along the way.

People signed up to receive transplant updates.
People learned about living kidney donation.
And some even took the first step by swabbing and joining the registry.

Every transplant begins with awareness.
Then one conversation.
Then one decision.
And eventually… a life saved.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and became part of the mission.
You could be the next match!

Eleven years ago, Rabbi Larry Rothwachs donated a kidney.

Yesterday in Bergenfield, New Jersey, the ripple effects of that decision were still being felt.

Alongside his wife Chaviva, who donated a kidney herself just one year ago, they spoke at a Renewal swab event that brought more than 100 people through the doors and led to 50 new swabs.

What makes this even more meaningful:
they are currently preparing for aliyah this summer, yet still took the time during one of the busiest seasons of their lives to inspire others to save lives.

This is how change happens.
One person says yes.
Then another.
Then another.

And eventually, an entire community begins to believe they can help save lives too.

David registered with Renewal Canada in February 2024 in hopes of finding a life-saving kidney donor.

The son of Holocaust survivors, David was born and raised in Ecuador before coming to Canada to pursue a career in the arts. Today, he lives in rural Vancouver Island and is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.

Tonight, Renewal Canada is hosting a Kidney Donation Awareness Event in Victoria, BC to help find David a match and bring hope to him and his family.

To the person who gave me a kidney:

There are no words big enough to properly thank someone for giving another human being a second chance at life.

And to every kidney donor out there:
you may never fully understand the ripple effect of your decision.

You are not only helping a patient.
You are giving families more time together.
More birthdays.
More memories.
More life.

This week, we were reminded once again that some of the greatest heroes walk among us very quietly.
Are you ready to be one of those heroes? Do you think you got what it takes?

While many families were cooking, preparing, and getting ready for Shavuot, one anonymous donor was preparing for transplant surgery.

What makes this story even more meaningful is that in Jewish tradition, we pray for a person using their name and their mother’s name.

His name for Teffilos ( prayers) is Yaakov Aryeh ben Ruth.

On the very holiday when we read Megillat Ruth and reflect on quiet acts of loyalty, kindness, and greatness, the son of Ruth quietly chose to give life to another person.

No recognition.
No spotlight.
Just extraordinary chesed.
