OYL's artists consider Papingo a second home and our work in NYC is constantly in conversation with our work in northern Greece. Here is actor Richard Saudek performing in two shows a decade apart - in Ellen McLaughlin's OEDIPUS in Ioannina in 2024 and in Mark Ravenhill's POOL (NO WATER) in NYC in 2014. How lucky we are to have extraordinary collaborators like Richard over the decades.

On POOL (NO WATER):

“Three cheers for the small but ambitious One Year Lease Theater Company for bringing this terrific 2006 play to local shores, in a vividly acted production.” — The New York Times, Charles Isherwood (Critic’s Pick)

“In 60 minutes of shadow-cut theatrical witchcraft, Demos and her superb cast make Ravenhill’s vinegary misanthropy dance, literally and figuratively.” — Scott Brown, New York Magazine

“Anytime A.R.T. or anyone else wants to bring Ravenhill or One Year Lease Theater Company back, I’m there.” — Ed Siegel, NPR Boston

“Playfully poisonous theatrical piece... Irresistible.”— Terry Byrne, Boston Globe

Over two decades of working in Papingo, Greece, OYL has had the privilege of working with incredible talent. In 2022 the inimitable Ellen Mclaughlin joined us to work on Antigone. During our time together the company gathered to read her play Kissing the Floor, a radical re-imagining of Antigone. We fell in love, and six months later OYL produced Kissing the Floor off-Broadway at Theater Row. THEN in 2024 Ellen joined us in India, Japan, and Greece – this time to stage her Oedipus for 6 performances in Greece from village squares, to outdoor amphitheaters, to the hallowed grounds of ancient Corinth. Two decades after Ellen’s Oedipus premiered at the Guthrie, OYL was honored to perform it in Greek and English WITH ELLEN playing with us on stage in the role of Tiresias and speaking her own text in Greek. How lucky we are.

From Greece to Off Broadway to Edinburgh:

please excuse my dear aunt sally (PEMDAS) by Kevin Armento was a commission by OYL. The show was built in Greece in 2014, premiered at in NYC in 2015 as a critics pick from the NY Times, and received the Stage Award in Edinburgh in 2016.

PEMDAS follows the journey of an illicit affair between a high school math teacher and her fifteen-year old student and is told through the eyes of the student’s cell phone. A breakneck journey from pockets to purses, through text messages and photo galleries, PEMDAS takes audiences inside a unique perspective on human interaction, and tries to unpack some of life’s most complex equations.

“The sleek seductiveness of good tech design… and the pulsing warmth of passion.”
— New York Times

“For the inquisitive millennial who’s grown up in a technologically obsessed culture, it screams of novelty.”
— Huffington Post, Alexandra Villarreal

“It’s a gleaming portrait of our collective contemporary existence... high-adrenaline and sleek production... the script reads like a lyric epic, filled with short stanzas that propel the story to exquisite effect.”
— American Theater Web, Andy Propst

How does OYL's work in Greece get translated to a NYC stage?

We’ll be sharing a bit of that 20 year history over the next few weeks.

Our 2017 Houston Stages and 2018 Off-Broadway production of BALLS began in Papingo, Greece and culminated with catching the final show at 59E59 Theaters.

OYL commissioned and to co-write a play inspired by the famous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

What critics had to say:

“Cleverly devised and executed perfectly” -

“Exciting and ingenious” “a must-see show” -

“Physically remarkable” “gripping work” - Theatre Is Easy
