This workshop is an introduction to personal digital privacy and information security practices! We will cover threat modeling, encryption & getting around the city, and how we make choices with data. Material will be provided for us to make personalized digital privacy zines, taking the information we find useful to craft our own pocket-guides.

This workshop is open to anyone, no pre-existing skills or technologies are required.

Don’t let your community 404! Building a personal archive of your life online doesn’t just help you regain control, it preserves an important snapshot for the history of everyday working people. We’ll discuss the importance of digital archival (with some guest speakers) before walking through how to download your social media history and view it offline (and optionally, delete it!). Let’s not surrender our timeline to Mark and Elon!

Join the Cypurr Collective for a super special screening of the Frontline Documentary Global Spyware Scandal: Exposing Pegasus, investigating the powerful Pegasus spyware, sold to governments around the world by the Israeli company NSO Group. The spyware is designed to secretly access mobile devices, allowing operators to read messages, track location, record calls and remotely activate the phone’s microphone or camera. Governments around the world have routinely used the spyware to surveil journalists, lawyers, political dissidents, and human rights activists. See a description of the film below:

(2023, Dir. Anne Poiret, Arthur Bouvart) FRONTLINE and Forbidden Films, the documentary arm of Forbidden Stories, investigate the powerful spyware Pegasus, sold to governments around the world by the Israeli company NSO Group. This two-part series, part of the Pegasus Project, examines how the hacking tool was used on journalists, activists, the wife and fiancée of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and others.

We’ll also be hearing from Demilitarize Brooklyn Navy Yard who will speak on their work to push out military tech companies Easy Aerial and Crye Precision (suppliers of the Israeli military) from the Brooklyn Navy Yard, as well as the connections between Big Tech and oppressive regimes in the U.S., Israel, and around the world.

Join Cypurr as we take on the surveillance-scape through film!

This month, we’ll be taking in small bites of cinema with discussions on the ever-growing threat of government use of surveillance tech and AI, as well as finding our autonomy in automated systems of authority. This afternoon’s menu of flicks includes:

- Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits- Set in an enclosed world where most of society must cycle on exercise bikes in order to generate electricity and then earn currency called “merits”, the episode tells the story of Bing (Daniel Kaluuya), who meets Abi (Jessica Brown Findlay) and convinces her to participate in a talent show so she can become famous.

- Benn Jordan: Breaking the Creepy AI in Police Cameras- If you live in the United States, it’s very likely that a private startup has been logging and sharing your vehicle’s location without your consent. In this video we explore how AI can defend against being tracked by 3rd party police and retail AI tracking cameras.

- Please Hold: A young man’s life is suddenly and inexplicably derailed, as he finds himself at the mercy of automated “justice.”

Next Cypurr event! RSVP in link in bio

For this month’s journey into tech-cinema, we’re taking a break from our usual 1995-cyberpunk-ethos to screen Seeking Mavis Beacon (2024, dir by Jazmine Jones), a film which “investigates the disappearance and reexamines the legacy of one of the most influential Black women in technology.” Sitting at the intersection of technology and race, this documentary questions the simultaneous commodification and erasure of black people in tech spaces, a topic that is as relevant as ever with the exploitation of Black avatars in the age of AI.

Come by to watch and stick around after for a discussion on the film!

For this session, we’ll take a dive into the rash of online safety bills that have been the talk of the internet lately (i.e. the Kids Online Safety Act [KOSA] and the like), and discuss how they affect folks of all different backgrounds. Bills like this will allow for the implementation of a slew of technologies meant to verify ages of users, including tools like ID checks, biometric scans, or other age estimation methods. Per the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), “Governments in the U.S. and around the world are increasingly adopting these restrictive measures in the name of protecting children online. But in practice, these systems create dangerous new forms of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion.”

Special Speaker: TBA
