Pay Black Women What They’re Worth
August 13th was Black Women’s Equal Pay Day — the day an average Black woman must work into 2020 to get paid what an average white man did in 2019. In published a report on why this wage gap happens in the corporate world. Two words: systemic racism. Senior leaders are less likely to interact with or promote Black women (even though Black women are qualified and ask). Black women are also affected by day-to-day discrimination and microaggressions — and don’t see strong allies in the workplace. So what can you do to support Black women? shares the following tips:
1. Talk openly about salaries, and be vocal where you see unfairness.
2. Encourage workplaces to do the work to fight systemic racism.
3. If you are not Black, routinely check your own workplace behaviors and biases.
4. Celebrate Black women’s achievements and advocate to pay Black women what they are worth, wherever you are
