Tenth graders in Ms. Wow’s class at in Washington Heights spent six weeks reading CLAP WHEN YOU LAND and were thrilled to meet award-winning author virtually to discuss!

One student asked, “What piece of advice would you give young writers?”

Elizabeth replied, “You want to write in a way that sounds like you and draws from your particular experiences….Because of AI, a lot of writing will start sounding similar. The people who stand out are going to be the people who sound like themselves….Be singular. Write in a way that is only you.”

Thanks so much to Elizabeth for joining us!

“What do writers need?” author of THE VANDERBEEKERS OF 141ST STREET asked 5th graders at .

Karina discussed the simple things you need to be a writer like pencil and paper and for her, bonus items like a dog to walk for thinking time, cats to keep you company, and snacks (She picks Hot & Spicy Cheese-Its)!

She asked students, “What else do you need as a writer? A story. Everyone has a story to tell so write them down.”

Thanks to Karina for speaking with every student as she signed each book and offering bookmarks, stickers, AND her corgi Lalo’s business card!

Thanks so much to (aka Maria on Sesame Street) for meeting 8th graders at in Brooklyn to launch Meet the Writers at their school! Sonia engaged students by speaking about her life and her work including her experience of the Young Lords for her novel THE REVOLUTION OF EVELYN SERRANO.

Sonia explained that the book took 15 drafts. “You have to be comfortable with re-writing. If you’re working on a computer, just start typing, or talk to it. Think of it like polishing a stone, refining it to be better, smoother.”

And students enjoyed speaking with Sonia one-to-one during the book signing!

Wonderful to connect to 7th graders at in Brooklyn! Students read TRASH VORTEX and were super-prepared to discuss the issues surrounding microplastics as well as some of Danielle’s other non-fiction books. Danielle shared her enthusiasm for researching and writing non-fiction and her hope for the future.

One student asked, “Which part of the plastic lifecycle is most important to target?”

Danielle replied, “Plastic isn’t really the enemy, but what you do with it is what’s important. The mindset that plastic is not valuable is one of the most important places to start….People have changed their habits, so we can change them again.”

Special shout-out to our student moderators!

author of the humorous and timely novel WE’RE NOT FROM HERE met 6th graders at and explained, “I have a pretty cool job. I’m a professional liar.”

Here are Geoff’s five surefire tips to becoming an author:
1: Read a lot.
2: Get bored! (Being bored is actually the precondition to being creative.)
3: Just do it! (But the hardest part is getting started.)
4: Re-do it. (It takes lots of re-writing to make a good story.)
5: Fail at it! (Making mistakes is how you get better.)

Thanks to Geoff for the excellent advice and for meeting every student and signing every book!
