ARTS - SOCIAL JUSTICE - NETWORKS TO COLLEGE
The Brooklyn College Community Partnership brings together young people and professional artists and educators to explore the world and their creativity, to develop artistic, academic, and job/life skills, engage in questions of justice in their local and global communities, and to grow networks to college. With programs in middle schools and high schoo
ls in Brooklyn, we might already have programs in your school! And, at our magical arts lab at Brooklyn College -- called BCAL -- middle schoolers and high schoolers from any school can discover an exciting and safe place to explore arts and technology (and themselves!), work towards college, and make new friends. Contact us if you're interested in coming to BCAL or if you have any questions about our programs. The Brooklyn College Community Partnership is a leading youth development organization that serves over 1500+ Brooklyn youth each year. Since 1994, BCCP has created networks of educational innovation that connect under-served youth, local middle and high schools, high-need communities, and Brooklyn College. Our school day and after-school programs use service-learning, college prep and the arts to:
1) Tap into the varied interests and learning styles of youth to link them to educational success.
2) Underscore the importance of social-emotional development.
3) Build resilience in youth by developing effective strategies to thrive. BCCP has set out to maximize educational access for under-served youth through asset-based approaches to network building. We listen to them. We recognize and validate their accomplishments. We support and foster the development of their interests. So rather than tell students about college, we use an experiential model to demonstrate college using real college students, a real college campus, and a real college professor. In this way, we rehearse the future and students become more available to explore a more detailed college plan. A student with a sound degree of self-esteem, confidence, emotional awareness, and knowledge based on experience is the one who sees college as a viable path.
