Get Repost App • Old Stone House of Brooklyn On June 25, 1776, British General William Howe arrived in New York’s Lower Bay with his man-of-war, the Greyhound, and a dozen other ships. They made no move to come ashore, and word from American privateers informed General George Washington that a fleet of 130 more ships were on their way. A few days later, when the rest of the fleet arrived, one frightened New Yorker observed that “I declare that I thought all of London was afloat.” More British ships arrived throughout the following month, and New Yorkers waited with bated breath to see when—or if—the British would attack.
