Freedom is more than a date on a calendar. ✊🏾

This Juneteenth, we reflect on the long journey from Galveston in 1865 to the neighborhoods we serve today. As we celebrate the end of slavery, we also acknowledge the systemic barriers—like the historic practice of redlining—that were designed to keep the promise of Juneteenth out of reach for many Black families.

The Undesign the Redline exhibit hosted at our office highlights how these maps shaped the geography of inequality in our city. True liberation requires dismantling these lasting legacies and ensuring equitable access to homeownership, investment, and community resources.

As we look back on the highlights of our recent Annual Benefit, we want to take a special, dedicated moment to celebrate two foundational pillars of the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) family who are entering well-deserved retirement.

🌟 Dany Cunningham – 30 Years of Service Dany has dedicated three decades to FAC as a foundational Board Member and former Board Chair. His strategic leadership, steady guidance, and unwavering commitment have helped steer our organization through generations of growth, ensuring we always stay true to our mission of community-led justice and equity.

🌟 Zully Rolan – 18 Years of Service As FAC’s Director of Asset and Property Management, Zully has spent nearly two decades ensuring that our affordable housing units aren't just buildings, but safe, stable, and dignified homes for thousands of New Yorkers. Her tireless work behind the scenes has been vital to keeping our communities rooted and secure.

It is a bittersweet moment for the entire FAC team. While we will deeply miss them, their leadership has left a mark on our organization and the neighborhoods we serve.

On May 19th, the FAC family gathered for our 2026 Annual Benefit and Awards Reception: Changing Times, Steadfast Values. It was a night filled with deep gratitude, soulful music by long-time tenant Edwin Vasquez, and powerful community milestones.

We brought home the meaning of Build, Power, Transform by honoring some incredible leaders:

🌟 The Power Award went to the 120 5th Avenue Coalition and Advocates, Geto & de Milly, and Brad Lander for refusing that community members be displaced and successfully securing affordable housing and a local grocery store at Paseo on 5th.

🌟 The Transform Award honored a brilliant FAC Adult Education graduate for his resilience in mastering English and launching a successful career.

🌟 We also raised a glass to say a bittersweet happy retirement to two pillars of the FAC family: Dany Cunningham (30 years of board service) and Zully Rolan (18 years leading Asset & Property Management). Thank you for everything!

- NYC Cooling Centers activated during heat emergencies—free, public spaces across all five boroughs.

For , we’re focused on the theme “Creating Homes, Building America.” At FAC, we know that building a stronger America starts with a bold vision for our own backyard.

That’s why we’ve launched the 2,000 Brooklyn Homes initiative—a holistic mission to create and preserve 2,000 affordable homes across the borough. But we aren't just building apartments; we’re integrating housing with community-driven strategies that support: ✅ Financial stability ✅ Career advancement ✅ Local leadership

To reach this ambitious goal, we’ve launched a $15 million enterprise capital campaign. By securing flexible, multi-year funding, we are strengthening our capacity to maximize long-term impact across Brooklyn. We’re proud to share that, to date, we’ve raised over $5 million of our goal.

The story of the 120 5th Avenue Coalition is a powerful reflection of this year’s theme: “Creating Homes, Building America.” It reminds us that "Building America" isn't just about new construction—it’s about a decades-long commitment to community stewardship.

From the abandoned Baltic Street lot of the 1960s to the opening of Paseo on 5th today, this site has been at the heart of FAC’s mission for over 40 years. When developers threatened to replace local resources with market-rate units in 2016, the Coalition stood firm. Their advocacy secured a Community Benefits Agreement that ensured this land would continue to serve working families.

Today, that vision provides the stability that residents like Elaine Peterson rely on. As she shares:

"There’s not a single day that I don’t recognize what a great opportunity it is. Not only to have somewhere affordable but to be able to stay somewhere for longer than a year. "

By protecting the land and the people on it, the 120 5th Avenue Coalition is truly building the America we want to see. 🏘️🧱
