culture crowdsourcing movements in both content and editorship. This initiative was created because certain indicators signal non-proportionate participation of people of African descent (including but not limited to self-identified Haitian, Caribbean, West Indian, African, Black-American, African-American, Black, Biracial, Counter-Racist and Afro-Latino subgroups) in the Wikimedia movement.

Join us as we celebrate Africa Day and game changing Africans all May.

Lola Akinmade Åkerström is a Nigerian photographer, speaker, travel storyteller, and an international author. She has published books in 18 languages which focuses on culture, tradition, and lifestyle.

Lola's storytelling project, ÅFRÖSWÈ̩DÉ̩, is currently in display at Photoville in Brooklyn Bridge Park from May 18 until May 30, 2026.

A friend of AfroCROWD, Lola was the Key guest speaker at AfroCROWD’s online photography event a few years ago, describing her experiences as a world renowned and award winning photographer helping new editors aiming to contribute photography to the lexicon through Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

She is a Hasselblad Heroine and 2018 Bill Muster Travel Photographer of the Year. In January 2024 her novel, Everything is Not Enough, earned a nomination in the Outstanding Literary Work at the NAACP Awards.

Celebrating the life of McLeod Bethune. She was an American educator, philanthropist, humanitarian, womanist, and civil rights activist. She also founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935, and proceeded to establish the Aframerican Women's Journal, which was the flagship journal of the organization.

Shortly after joining the National Youth Administration in 1935, Bethune became the first Black woman to lead a federal agency when she was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the head of a department within the National Youth Administration.

We are celebrating Africa Day all month long! Join us as we highlight notables Africans.

Thomas Owusu Mensah was a Ghanaian-American chemical engineer and inventor who contributed to the development of fiber optic manufacturing and nanotechnology. He had 14 patents, and was inducted into the US National Academy of Inventors in 2015. In 2017, Mensah served as editor-in-chief of the textbook Nanotechnology Commercialization, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Great news in Black excellence! James, our African Youth Liaison has been named Top Eleven Eco Champions In Nigeria

This week, James was among the eleven young leaders across Nigeria who contributed their quota by solving climate related issues in Nigeria. The award was presented by SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria SOS Children's Villages Nigeria in recognition of our project he conducted with us in the Winter.

James rose to the moment and chose to equip the next generation of leaders on how to make use of digital right to close the content gap about climate on Wikipedia, the most visited encyclopedia.

During Project in 2025, James trained over 50 youth in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The attendees learnt how to contribute to various Wikimedia projects.

We are glad to hear the good news and proud of James and his work as AfroCROWD’s Youth Liaison!

In 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
