Children of the City responds to the staggering rates of poverty and neglect affecting families in Southwest Brooklyn by offering support, counseling and academic programs for children. Language and cultural barriers coupled with lack of education for many parents results in frustrated and often ignored children who receive little help at home and are faced with many barriers to their own growth a

nd success. With overcrowded schools, lack of resources and extremely high drop out rates, children in Sunset Park lack the guidance and opportunities to reach their full potential, academically and emotionally. Our goals are to close the academic skills gap for each child and to address social issues hindering success by implementing our unique, multifaceted approach to development, healing and achievement. We offer programs that not only support children but also their family on all levels. Our programs include:
- Create Success Afterschool and Summer Program
- College Prep Program for High School Students
- Youth Mentoring
- In-home Counseling
- Legal Guardianship
- Trauma Intervention
- Financial Counseling
- Super Saturday Community Events
- Parent Training Workshops
- Family Support Program
- Advocacy with state and city agencies on behalf of children

From learning times tables to improving reading and math skills, these are the real, practical ways our after-school program is helping students move forward in school.

Our programs are designed to produce results. We assess students before and after to track growth — and we consistently see improvements in test scores, reading levels, and math performance.

What started as home visits quickly became something much bigger.

As we stepped into homes, we saw firsthand the needs families were facing, and how much support was missing.

That’s where Children of the City began in 1982.

What started with a few visits, quickly grew into after-school programs, food distributions, and ongoing support for families across the community.

Because when you see the need up close, you don’t walk away... you build something to meet it.

That means where a child grows up can determine the opportunities they have access to, before they’re ever given a chance to prove what they’re capable of.

At Children of the City, we’re working to change that.
